Hey dipshit, I posted the link in my very first post. You come over on this thread for more embarrassment or you really want to learn how to build a box??? Either way, like I told you before, take notes. Oh, and since you're so eager to breed that bitch that ain't even yours, maybe you can take the time to help shelter her too. Even a piece of shit cur bred dog deserves better than that.

i used the same plans with much success. i see you were like my and have to puzzle-piece some sections in that aren't listed/labeled in the "blueprints."

do yourself a favor and take the insulation OUT of the floor. you will over heat your mutt in the winter. pack straw in there so they have to pack it down; my gyp has a "nest" worked out in a circle in hers. if you raise it off the ground with a brick at each corner, the air will do much better job keeping the house temp even as long as it's packed with straw and the walls are insulated.

also, if you don't hinge the roof, you will lose it next time we have a wind storm. and, pound the nails out and go with wood screws, or you'll be re-hammering all season long when it gets cold.

looks good, and don't mean to be hypercritical, but these were tips someone gave me that have come in VERY handy when building a dog house (thx MRod). btw, looks like you went with 3/4 inch treated ply like myself. a little more, but one coat of stain every spring and you will be good to go.

i'll try and post some pics of mine the kids let me out of the house today so you can see what it looks like before its third ohio winter ;).

Over insulate a dog house? Never heard there was such a thing, the reason I wouldn't insulate the floor is to drill holes in it to release moisture from the dog that they might bring in from snow, rain or mud. Pack that thing full of straw and another idea to help pack and make it easy to clean, cut a barrell in half and use that is the "house" part and then you can pull it out as need and wash it easily. I agree with the raised off the ground, with bricks, if you want call a spade, a spade , and it should be wood that raises it off ground so it is stable, bricks will get pulled out in a heartbeat by a chain. The reason you pull it off the ground and keep it raised is to not let air flow through, it is keep frostline from reaching the house and easier to keep moisture out from rain. 6 inches is good unless you are a within a state or two of canada being north USA. Stain is no good at all, you do it every year as he says, use a oil based primer inside and outside with oil based paint over it, use a medium base color, tans or brown, reflect heat during summer, attracts heat during the winter. The hinges on the roof can be good to a degree but if the lid is tight fitting it will not fall or blow off and the second bad part to when a dog house has hinges is a dog that might knock it off and get himself tangled in it. Best thing to use is heavy duty eye hooks so if it does come off it is off and if not it stays in place securely. Nice job yardboy.

Extra tip, point the door of the house facing south so you get the warm wind when it comes up from the south and build the house side that where the dog sleeps on the west side when the sun is at the hottest part of the day and then they have shade on the opposite side during the summer, helps dry out the straw/cedar as well because it will see the most sun always.

The place where the house sits is on a slope so I have a 4x4 under the back side and only the very front touches the ground. I'm in Lowes parking lot right now bout to get wood for another one. I'm gonna go with the 1 1/2" board insulation on all the houses and even in the floor cause I dot think the moisture will be a problem and the floor is raised with 2x4 from the actual bottom. Plenty of straw should allow all the moisture to make it's way to the floor which is made of osb instead of treated plywood so if it gets old it ain't gonna be no problem to change out. I did use galvanized screws for everything except the lid frame. The lid fits so tightly it's hard for me to get it on and off so I'm gonna let it ride for now without hinges but if it becomes an issue I will find some Fasteners and screw it down as well. Thanks for the too about retreatment each year and all other suggestions. I appreciate it. :)

Wouldn't you know it hasn't rained in weeks and the day I go to build e second one it pours. Got all the stuff though. They didn't carry dry-lok plywood at Lowes so I had to go with treated again. I'll just have to keep an eye on her. Also they didn't have the Polystyrene in 1 1/2" so I went styrofoam 1 1/2". It had a better r rating anyway. Everything just sittin there waiting.

What the hell happened to Jayhawk???

say what you want about insulating the floor........do it and see how your dog does in one of those three week stretches where it's 10 or below like it's been the last 5+ years around here. they'll overheat and bail from the house or have problems in a quick minute.

    jmo.

i also use the 1.5 inch pink board insulation in the four walls once it starts dropping below 40 at night. and it's packed so full of straw it literally becomes a nest they curl up in.

What's the r rating on the pink board? Well, you been around here and raising dogs a hell of a lot longer than I have so I'll try it without insulation and plenty of straw. Heat goes up anyway so I don't think I'll have to worry about losing heat through the floor.

YArdboy do you have any previous carpenter skills? How dificult is it to build something like this?

I guess I've done a little bit of everything and mastered none. I put way more thought into those instructions than I needed to because there's no written instructions. Just had to use my phone to look and copy what I saw. Not hard but took a few hours.

good job yb...im a union carpenter so i agree with the rolled insulation...it has to sit up in there normal..not compressed or else its no good..go with the boards

I have some doghouse like Yardboy but mine are made of plastic dunnage and work great and the only part that is wood is the top and divider and a wooden door flap they tore the rubber one up.

oh ya..dosnt matter if its treated wood or not..get it of the ground..the water will wick up the wood and do damage to your hard work
