What makes a mother eat her puppies other than hungry?

 

Stress,first time mother,i have had one and seen a couple of other bitches try and kill pups as soon as they popped out,i guess they just did'nt like having pups.

 

Nothin' wrecks your night like having to throw a puppy head in the garbage. Seriously. :eek: Been there, would prefer not to again. :o

I think sometimes, as the instinct is there to eat the placenta, an inexperienced mum can just start chowing down on the cord and placenta and just not stop at the pup.

 

Some mothers purposely kill their pups when theres something wrong with them as well. but usually from stress.

 

I thinklots of thing can come to mind when this happes, either , shes just a bad mom, she feels somehing is wong with'em, inexperienced, or the moms lack of calcium in which she craves therfore she eats the pups.. It sucks , but it happens in the wild

 

Probably lack of release of certain post delivery hormones.

As puppies nurse, it releases hormones that encourage the mothering instinct. If you can catch her after the first cannibalism and clean the second pup yourself, the you can start that pup nursing on her under a constant supervision. You may have to do this with one more pup. Hopefully by then the nursing pups will jump start the hormones and she'll be good to go. Otherwise you may have to catch, clean and bottle feed the rest.

 

I agree with the posts above,but in some cases it's in the breedings.within certain families of the mayfield lines the females are known to be very cannibalistic.

 

Dons dogs and his line were not known for being cannabalistic, kershner's mutts are known for it, but then again who knows what are in kershner's mutts as before and during he got his mayfield dogs he was breeding ambulls and it is a known fact he made the cross .

 

Only female I ever had do it, had a few litters before this one with no problems. She was about a 5-6 year old dog, Always was a good mother with no problems so wasnt watching her extremely close. She killed all the pups then the next day she prolapsed and died. I think she knew something wasn't right. I also don't believe in bottle feeding the ones the mom pushes away either though. Mother Nature knows alot more than we do.

 

they are probably starving for nutrients that they are not recieving

 

i agree with super sport for the most part. we had a bitch that took WAY to long to give birth, we just thought that it didnt take till the last breeding.
well the bitch finally gave birth to 2 pups, she killed both & died the next day.

im guessing that they know the pups arent ok, and that they "cull" the weakest link persay to make room for the healthy pups. instincts come to play.

 

A bitch that does this never gets another chance at it again in my book, Most say it is to extreme since there can be many causes. But in my experience this is something that ends up cropping up in your line if you don't watch it, Male or female any dog that goes after pups doesn't get another shot on my yard.

 

i dont know of any domestic breed that can abort a pregnancy, however from what i understand a wolf can abort a litter before giving birth, so maybe thats just nature working itself out with domestic breeds.

 

Gr. Ch. Nikki over this side of the pond aborted a litter of pups they were three weeks early. She never took to a breeding again.

A great shame that was hey oldtymer, would of been good to see how she produced. Record speaks for it self but was told by someone who saw her she was the best bitch his seen.

 

That's the family that i was talking about. also a lot of females off of Brasken were known for it.

i have a bitch out of champ pedro and champ crazy jack she a good mom till it time to wen the pups then she kill them but the ones she dont kill or fire

 

The mother dogs are listening to Brotha Lynch Hung too much. @ Zoe you really had to threw a puppy's head away after the mother bit it off? That would ruin way more than just my night. DamnN!
