Dog fighting under investigation in Harrisburg

The Central Pennsylvania Animal Alliance is teaming up with Harrisburg City Councilman Brad Koplinsky to crack down on dog fighting in the city of Harrisburg. A special hearing on the matter was held before the Public Safety Committee to discuss the issue that some say isn't being addressed.

A spokesperson for the Humane Society of Harrisburg Area says they do receive dogs with obvious wounds and scars from fighting. Koplinsky says while they believe a number of the dogs involved in these incidents are coming from the Allison Hill section of the city, the actual crimes are hard to detect. The fighting reportedly often happens underground and those involved go to great lengths to keep it secret, including soundproofing the space they're using.

Members of the Alliance say they want to bring in specialists from Allegheny County to train police in Harrisburg on how to investigate and prosecute those involved in dog fighting. In addition to the proposed training for local police, public service announcements and cash rewards are also part of the plan of attack.
