Nope, just every now and again. Just make sure that there is enough moisture in the system and don't overload. Works well in the right climate with not too many dogs. I used a similar system for years with great results and very little maintenance. It is simply too cold for most of the year here to use it now, however.

 

what would you consider an overload? could it handle atleast four dogs?

 

they sell dog-doo septic systems that are rated for varying numbers of dogs based on the size of the unit. I have a couple that are each rated for 4 dogs that are about the size of a 5 gallon bucket, and I also have a couple five gallon buckets in the ground I use. I would be cautious using a big can like the one in the example because if your soil drains well, you will be filling it every day with the hose to keep it moist. The crap won't break down if it dries out, the live enzymes need the water in order to live and multiply, and they eat the crap. Might be better off with several smaller sized units strategically placed around the yard....

The can shown should handle twice that many with the right maintenace and weather. I like that better than the Doggie Dooley system they sell in stores, etc.

How long does that last you? We dig a pit about 5ft square and bury our shit. Thats for 18 dogs. The last one lasted a year.
