when is the time for you

    first heat
    second heat
    third heat

based on if the dog is worthy in your eyes to be bred

I say skip one but Ive heard some crazy stuff so when do you decide to breed your jips

No one in their right mind breeds a dog on it's first heat.

I prefer to not see a female bred before 2-3 years of age.

female at least 2, and more like 3 or 4....now how do yall feel about males? plenty of males have been "proven" BEFORE the age of 2

I don't believe in breeding a dog before it is both physically and mentally mature. At least 2 years of age, but even that is rather young.

words outta my mouth. mental maturity in a bitch is what its about be it 2 years or 5 years. JMO.

The great F.B. Has bred more than one female one her first heat... Not saying he advocates it, just stating what HE has admitted too....

  7. If you are talking Floyd B., well, he is/was third generation into these dogs......at that level, well, intuition is a major part of the assessment.

I would say that neither 1, 2, or 3 is the right answer. I cannot believe a bitch can be proven worthy before the age of 2 (at earliest). Anything prior to that and you are fooling yourself. Now, this is a general statement....I understand there are freaks out there but those are few and far between.

Times and attitudes change. I know quite a few of older dog people who swear that the best litters they ever saw came off of first/second heats, and that young bitches tend to get more mature/proportioned bodies after whelping. But, that's opinion.

As far as maturity is concerned, people often forget that good mothers tend to produce good mothers and puppy rearing is mostly instinctual for a bitch. So, she won't necessarily be a "better" mother because she is six years instead of six months. Plus, considerations of "maturity" etc. should really be confined to physical maturity. Heat means she's physically mature. Considering how the female productive system works, younger eggs are better eggs are better chance for more and more vital pups. And, we aren't talking about teenage parents who will have to take care of their babies for eighteen years here, although you might think so when you hear some of the arguments provided. They're dogs; wean and out of the den.

Anyhow, in this day and age, the political/population ramifications must also be taken into account when breeding dogs, especially pit bulls. So, common sense dictates that you should know what a dog/bitch is all about before breeding it, For me, that takes about two to three years for bitches, four to five years for dogs.

  11. Inter-tel- I'd have to agree with you, between 2-4 can be the perfect peak in a bitch's health

    HighCoastHiker- well said too

high coast and clk, good points. way I see it is much like high coast, if a female comes in heat shes physically ready, in the wild she would breed most likely to a strong male [natural selection] our politically correct mentality can get in the way of natures way...saying that though our dogs are not in the wild so yes you gotta know your dogs and if you been breeding a specific line etc you have good indicators to know whats what and when is right for any particular individual. JMO.

There are many variables and no concrete set in stone time lines.

that was a good answer noway...but it is really no book on breeding..
I dont breed but i realize that there are differences in every family of dogs that can contribute to op's question.. also differences in breeders preferences/dislikes... breed what you like or what u want to have and if your lucky ,you will have what you want..

if its a good one, no earlier than 3rd heat or 2 years old but she would have to have developed and shown she is worthy of breeding

In the wild side book they would breed on the first , but mostly small bitches to help with labor later in life, so is there a right in wrong its presonal preference.....

most experienced kennels with females just for broad will breed on first heat.
the females are only used for there bloodline, agree with it or not but i bet most people here own dogs from kennels that practice this method

i won't breed till im 100% that the dog is all bulldog. im never in a rush to stick a bitch. so breeding to a 4 or 5 year old bitch is something i do offten. they can still put pups on the ground @ 8 or 9 if they are in good shape. if there is any doubt it won't be getting bred on my yard. i cant see doing any more then 2 or 3 breeding with a bitch.
