Tucson couple pleads guilty in dogfighting case

I think you did the best you felt you could do for the family and that's the way it should be....family first. Just as long as your not turning states evidence and your actions only effect you. I do hate they have any bragging rights of a conviction but obviously it does not matter if they win or lose they will continue to prosecute owners and murder their pets until somebody strikes back. Maybe we should donate money for hitmen instead of lawyers. Oh and for those reading thinking that as a threat.....It's a joke....or is it!

Just a couple of last thoughts, I was asked at least 6 times to turn in evidence ( snitch out ) against my -co-defendants ,all four of them by the way,I told everyone I wasn't aware of any illegal activities ,the lead detective in our case told me she had alot of incriminating evidence on paper and if I didn't co-operate she would press charges and we would have to go to court, I never knew about the Child porno Images ,the way I found out is a local news station showed up at my door and asked my wife about the indictment of child exploitation,to this day the states story has changed at least three times and I still don't know the whole truth but now somehow in my pre-sentencing report my nephew is involved ,again there were collections were taken up for my four other co-defendants as they are popular and well known my wife and I are no-ones we never snitched even when the state took our kids twice and even wrognly aressted my oldest son and had him expeled from a fedraly funded school for something he never did ,when the prosecutor sent us a letter saying no -further action would not be taken against him ,not even as much as a apology from the Pima County Sheriffs Department ,then they held our 4 children as ransom for us to snitch everyone else out ,I have it all documented and recoreded where CPS and the Sheriffs tell us and one attorney all we have to do is co-operate with the sheriffs ,we never did the state kept our children 4 days longer than the state legally allows before they are forced to file a petition of gaurdianship,then our trial starts and our Public Defenders tell of us even if we win the dogfighting charges the state will still try and forfiet or home and property and what are we going to do about that and they won't even touch our misdimeanor charges as the state only pays to get off the felony charges if we went to court and won we would be homeless as the state ,even though my co-defendants have been aquited and found innocent of dog fighting ,they are still trying to forfeit there property's and have at this point had to put up a bond on their properties and pay out another 10,000$ in attorney fees to try and keep their homes and properties ,again I have no income other than the 214.00$ a week my wife gets in unemployment.I know my other 2 co-defendants will be aquitted also and no-one hates more than my wife and I the bragging rights the HSUS has over us than me

TUCSON -- It was a major investigation -- a team of agencies working together for over a year to bust an alleged dog fighting ring in February of 2008. But when it seemed the Southern Arizona Case was long over, a development in the case shocked even some detectives.

It is a rare look inside the underground world of dogfighting.

"Unless you know someone in the business, you would not have access to this magazine," says Dawn Barkman of the Pima County Sheriff's Department.

Just some of the many pieces of evidence, found during a major raid at a home in Avra Valley in 2008 and used to help charge the owners Juan and Zeida Verdin with animal cruelty. The Verdins were accused of breeding and selling dogs to fight, and they later pled guilty to animal cruelty and received probation.

The pit bulls' fate was much different. 90 of the 150 dogs were euthanized, eemed too aggressive to rehabilitated. Now more than a year later, the tools that trained them to be agressive are going right back to those charged with doing it.

"The detective told me she has never seen an order like this from a judge, to give dog fighting evidence back to a person who has pled guilty."

The judge in the case ordered the prosecution and the detectives to hand over tie-out chains and exercise jennies -- dog fighting training devices. Animal cruelty investigators say tie-out chains are used to discourage socialization and keep dogs separated. Exercise jennies are like horse walkers. A dog is tied to one part of the wheel while a live kitten or other bait is put on the other end. The dog runs non stop trying to get the bait it will never catch. When exercise is over they are given the bait.

Both are designed to create the desire for blood, and both are going back to those who pled guilty to animal abuse. Also going back -- the method to sell the dogs that are trained to fight.

We requested to talk to the judge in the case, but we were told he does not comment on his cases.

Although they are getting some of their items back, the Verdins remain on their 3-year probation in which they are not allowed to own animals.

Dogfighting is a felony. If you suspect dog fighting in your neighborhood, call the dogfighting tip line: 1-877-TIP-HSUS (4787).

You can remain anonymous. There's a five thousand dollar reward if your tip leads an to an arrest of a dogfighter.

I hate how they make it sound like 150 dogs belonged to them, which they didn't. And, like they had all sorts of evidence of dog fighting . . they returned their property. Things like computers, photos, ribbons, trophies, pedigrees etc.

The media is so f'in retarded. Why don't they write about how the state is still trying to take the Patrick's property even though they were acquitted!?

Or about how Bobby Smith is sick as a dog, but is still awaiting a "fair and speedy trial" as "guaranteed" by the law. . .

The "new" evidence was an old undated video from TJ Mexico of a party next to a pit where dogs were being rolled.You could hear voices of young people but no way to identify whose young people. R2 and his wife freaked out and even though everyone spend hours on the phone with them telling them DONT take a plea, when we got to court they wouldnt even look at any of us and took that plea. R2 had no equity in his home at all, so that forfeiture was only a threat to the owners of the mortgage. R2's truck was in the video only you couldnt see the license or tell whose truck it was. It was worthless. The kid downloading porn was just something the prosecution used to threaten with. They pulled out all the stops on that one, threatening life in prison served in another state etc. It was all crap to instill fear. There was a cousin on a video camera that belonged to another family member, large extended family, that had videotaped himself doing the hand thing. That was used to threaten but no one ever actually viewed it. In disclosure I got the videos that were "new" evidence and still have them. Nothing there. As for the porn the older boy downloaded, it was stuff all the kids were passing around. That is nothing new for teens to do that. They are not aware of the law and how it can be used to hurt the parents. They are kids and dont care. Verdins wife turned out to be a cowardly shrew who showed no gratitude for all the help, financial and otherwise those people got. She sent him and his pals to our door to try to break it down. All the time she was emailing me how I was a bitch and should be brought up on charges etc. Verdins wife is one sick cookie. He is a man with numerous health problems and she follows him around with his cell phone, telling him what to do. The incident at our house was her doing. All we wanted was for them to return the balance of some expensive hand loads we had let them use. Lots of excuses, but no return, untill Pat got sick of the whole thing and all the excuses. Then we got it back in about 45 minutes, thrown onto the front yard with threats and email fight challenges. Sick. Anyway, they threatened to go to the prosecutor but it was too late, we had been acquitted without even putting up a defense. There was no case. The forfeiture was done because the prosecution and HSUS are poor losers and had a paid for crook of a judge. We lost our property without even a hearing. The next thing was cheating us on a financial deal on the other place. That is still up for dispute. Its all about careers and ego and lying and stealing. Justice has nothing to do with it. We never broke even one of thier laws or regulations in 30 years and there was NOTHING on our property or one dog with any scars or injuries or that wasnt in perfect health. There were no pregnant dogs and only one or two dogs that were over 12 years old with a few minor problems related to age. All were fat and healthy and friendly dogs. Every single dog!They even tried to keep a lot of my personal property, Bobby Hall book, Stratton book, Tim Murphy book, my small number of gold coins and silver dollars, my mom's diamond ring, lots of miscellaneous stuff, and tattoo equipment, all of it purloined by someone who had access to the evidence lockers and vaults. I even got a xerox of a hundred dollar bill, not the bill itself. After calls from me and my lawyer, we finally got the cash, but no books or other stuff. Still no results on that. These so called law enforcement are crooks and thieves and liars. They dont like having to come up with chains of custody on missing stuff. They will stall and lie to get out of admitting who had access to your stuff. They want it for themselves. As for R2 and his ridiculous wife, she even threw a temper tantrum out in the hall over one lawyer mentioning one of thier dogs in court. It was ridiculous, you could hear inside the court. Then she runs around with this look of hate on her face every time you see her. She was a pretty girl, but now is a fat ugly witch with a sneer constantly on her face. How to make yourself ugly! That is the upshot of this discussion about these people. Oh, yes, he is back running Eli dogs again even though he is barely able to feed them.He also had made a point of trashing us every chance he gets and spreading lies about us. They took the plea, no one made them do it, so now they blame us for their stupidity and cowardness no matter how justified it may have been at the time.
