Dog is way to young to start trying to pull him.

yea would be pointless to get a harness right now considering your pups only 4months, he'll end up outgrowing it by the time hes ready to even get started. You can help your training by feeding a quality kibble and doing some hand walking for now. He's still a pup so there's no rush, let him develop and mature before you start any type of weight pull.

I agree getting a harness now would just be a waste of money. You should just focus on basic obediance till the pup is mature. That will make training for weight pull or anything else a lot easier in the future.

Give your dog until closer to a year, then get her a proper harness and have at it. My two young dogs are 8 months old, and I figure that gives me a few months to save up the money to get them both CDpits harnesses.

DKSPITS: You don't need a book. Just go to the 'weightpullng' section on this board. There is enough good info to keep you busy for a week of reading.

  9. hey i was told that about 9mths plus after training that i could buy a harness not a pulling 1 & tie an empty water jug with rocks in it and walk the dog so it gets use to someting behind him . what do you guys think so that ok or no?

  10. As soon as there shots are up to date I bring my pups to the track and let them watch as I work my older dogs. Then when I am done I let them play around on the track, and i walk them up and down the track so they get use to the track. I have puppy harnesses that I use to get the pups use to having a harness on. At nine months I start dragging a milk jug behind them so they get use to the noise, and I also start with very light track training. In the ADBA you can pull your dog in competition when they are nine months old. I don’t pull my dogs on really heavy weights until they are a year and a half old. But there training starts early in life. the problem I see the most is people taking a nine month puppy and having it pull to its max every time, and in my opinion that is not healthy for the dog.

When your dog is older, here is a good harness site, cdPits. They also have pages on how to train a dog to pull.

I know a guy that has some of the top weight pull dogs around and he starts them young. But not by pulling he will put his litter of pups on the cart and let the older dogs pull them so the pups can get used to the sounds and see another dog doing it and he does that when they are about 8 weeks old. And then he will teach the pups to walk up and down the track so they wont be afraid of the new surface. Sounded like a pretty good idea to me. But he trains othere peoples dogs to pull to and charges 600$ a month.

like its been said here, the puppy is too young to pull, but you can work other things like been said here too, i stated by getting cheap harness and getting dog used to wearing harness, then pulling lightweight stuff that made diferent noise, getting dog used to pull command, you can do other stuff whille "waiting" that the dog grows.

    ;)

  14. How can half of you even make posts in this section when you obviously have no idea what you are talking about. go buy any weight pull book or go to any weight pullers website and you'll know you start them on a harness young to get used to it. if you dont have 50 bucks for a decent adjustable harness then dont worry about doing weight pulling anyways.

MONTANA: RELAX! The people who posted are knowledgeable and know there stuff. It's called an opinion.

I think most are saying, keep it VERRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRY light at first. Let em' ride in the cart like 143 said. I have mine out by the track, so they can see what is going on. Get em' used to the sound, etc.

To the OP, what have you done w/ your pup? I am curious if you took the suggestion and what is happening w/ your pup as of now?

  16. yes i'm sorry, but to say you shouldnt get them used to harnesses cause they'll just outgrow them is ridiculous. some people had great responses, others, i wonder if they even have a pit.

my pup is 5 and 1/2 months old and has just started pulling a 3 lb weight this week.

  17. I always start my dogs out with a harness, any good harness maker will make you a puppy harness that you can get them use to for half the price of a comp. harness. Most of the dogs i have delt with dont mind the harness, and if they did they got over it in about 5 minutes. Everbody trains there dogs in different ways, i talk to weightpullers at every pull i go to some of there stuff works for me, some dont.
