I completely agree. My pup is just now starting French Ring training (similar sport to schutzhund), and he is out there to have fun. We are only working him on the flirt pole right now, and he loves to bark and chase. We he wins the tug, we do a victory lap and he'll run full tilt back to the decoy/trainer with his tail wagging and pretty much saying "Look what I got!" He is learning the decoy is someone fun and exciting to play with, and he is focusing his drive on the tug. He has also figured out that the prey moves every time he barks, hence the barking he is doing out on the field. He's not barking at the man--he is barking to continue the game! My pup's confidence is great, but he is lacking a bit in drive right now (I was raising him as a lazy house dog haha), especially when compared to the Dutchie pup we have in our club. Next week we are going to let him watch the other pups out on the field to build his frustration, which should be fun.

Other breeds, such as the Malinois which can be nervy sometimes, take the training much more seriously but it is based a lot in prey drive and most of the time (not always!) the dog will only go after the sleeve.

this is my pup, who is totally unimpressive right now but i think this is only his 2nd time out:

I thought that dogs that participate in bite sports were not allowed to register as therapy dogs. I remember reading that somewhere.

Also, BB, the barking was the part that I had the most difficulty with. Never got him to do it. Congrats.

Sport work is all about control. If your dog is not clear headed or a nervy pile of $hit. It will not do well in this arena.
Hey bringbackup; your in CA you should talk to the Diva of french ring Leri Hansen. She is the best out their in training a bulldog for french ring period.
I use to think the same thing as a lot of you. I would never train a bulldog for man work. I know now that that was ignorance, and have since changed my train of thought.A good bulldog can do absolutely any and everything you ask of it. I train my dogs for PSA and I'm starting my new pup in French ring.

I've seen Leri Hansen's main male on videos, and he is real nice. She is in So Cal and I'm in Nor Cal, but I'm sure she does travel occassionally so I'm just hoping she'll make her way up here the next time I attend a French Ring trial lol I'd love to pick her brain if I got a chance. She was going to do a breeding with her male dog that interested me, but I think the bitch got pyometra and they had to do an emergency spay.

Pipbull, my pup is a noisey fellow--getting him to bark was the least of my worries lol We have a Malinois bitch who gets so amped up out on the field, she won't bark. It's strange but I guess she gets tunnel vision and isn't capable of making herself bark.

It has not been an issue for me and my dogs, they know what sports I do and they have never said anything. No where in TDInc does it say anything about protections dogs. The dogs just have to pass an intensive temperament test.

With TDI, they will certify a dog that has done bitework. When I got Xanny tested, I had to explain what bitework she'd done on the initial paperwork. Then, they wrote me a request for more clarification. I explained more, as well as sending copies of her CGC, TT, GDT/ID3. Then they were OK.
Delta Society does what I consider more intensive testing (TDI is just the CGC w/3 more subtests), but they will not certify any dog that has done bitework. That's a limitation put on them due to their insurance, not their actual opinion towards bitework.
I think Leri Hanson's Capone might have his TDI. He's a very nice male. <!-- / message -->

good to know about Delta, there are several national groups that do therapy dog testing. TDI (therapy dogs international), Delta society, and TDInc (therapy dogs Incorporated). So TDI and TDInc you can have a protection dog and in Delta you cannot. Lesli H thanks for that info!:D
