When do you stop breeding your stud because he is not producing? What is a good number to do a field study? I have been watching people with multiple studs and it seems like they get around 10 litters then sit and wait for the outcome? Can someone please explain some techniques for finding a good producer?

I don't believe there is a number. I believe it depends on how the dog was kept his stud. The better you take care of your dogs, the more you should get out of them. Jm2c

Most people don't believe this but the gyp is over 50% of what hits the ground! A male that is the fastest on four legs and won multipal races is no garunteee he will produce! Believe me over the last 40+ years I have been disappointed more than once! When I see A great dog II'm looking for the one that produced it! Especially if the stud is from multiple outcrosses!

Agree strongly,, I was taught long ago, if a man has a good bitch, he can pick from any number of good studs & not worry about the other half.. Meaning as you said that 50% , not enough give the ol gal credit or a second thought..

At what point do you say this dog is not producing? 1 litter that goes 0-6 and then you say screw him? Just say you breed to two females that have produced on previous litters and this time one goes 0-5 and the other female and your stud get 1 ch and no other winners.

hard to say but I wouldnt judge on just one litter,,, perhaps three...

    alot of variables,,,
say the couple semen that make it carry the good gene and find the right golden egg,,,
this might happen on the first cast or the last and odds are always in numbers...

I would look for that lucky breeding pair and repeat till the wheels fall off...

as far as what stud is consistently producing is the one that you seek,,,
they are far and few and usually produce in every litter...

I rather pay a higher stud fee for a proven producer that others have done the foot work with than
taking a gamble on a whole litter off a stud thats unproven...

And as trotline mentioned the dam is often overlooked as being an equal in breeding evaluations...

Im with all of you and I get all angles. EP know my goal i am trying to accomplish. I got 14 offspring from the same stud and the oldest are 12 months old and I love them, but I also have other females coming ino heat. Do I wait on the oldest crew to get of age before I breed the stud again or do I keep sticking him? The females are good dogs and the lines I have produce the over used term HOT PUPS so I can't say he is producing because how the pups act I can't lie to me.

Sit on em and wait..i would be hard fckng pressed to filled 14 chainspots thinking none of them would have made the grade.. let them mature ,dont be uncle sam and send them off to war at 15! As far as repeat breeding.. what are the percentages that they are better than the first? Patience...i tell folks all the time not to pollute the world with more trash unless they have to. atleast you are asking the right questions. i think you knew the answer. its not the amount of pups persay ..there are alot of variables.

I wrote that in A hurry, what I meant to say is A stud like Stu Fowler, or King Solomon. Not because they were famous dogs, but they could produce with A good gyp from different families. I just used those two as an example there were and are great producing dogs famous and ones nobody knows about. Whether you breed more gyps or not just depends on how many chain spots you can have. Good Luck
