Increasing amount of off leash dogs in my area.

There has been a lot of off leash dogs in my neighborhood lately, particularly at the public park and its getting to the point where I'm having to walk later and later to avoid these SSF assholes. I try to walk in the mountains away from everyone a lot of times. On one hand I want to just say screw it and continue walking any time I feel, but on the other, I do not want confrontation with stupid off leash dogs, and their owners.
I'm just curious as to how others are handling these types of situations.

I live in the country and have the same problem with farm dogs. They actually call them free range dogs. In 8yrs ive had two confrontations and that was enough for me. When you have theses performance hounds it doesnt matter if you are right...cause in the publics eye you are wrong for owning and aggressive dog. And these slanders will come from the folks that had the actual dog that was the aggressor. If your dog protects you or itself, chances are it wont matrer just for the simple fact its a pitbull. I was forced to find a 1/4mi strech of road that had no houses or farm dogs and i walk it back and forth. Its boring but its better then having those problems. Harsh fact is the population of humans is out of control, therefore the amount of pets and strays also on the rise. Good luck

We have that problem a lot over here. I've already vowed to have my phone on at all times to let the court see that there was an off leash dog who attacked me. and if i don't have my break stick on me? well that stray is out of luck. sounds harsh, but it technically counts as my dog protecting me. and she isn't an APBT, though some have accused her of being one.

I try to walk mine where people don't often frequent. It's not easy in the city but I find some good places that are fairly secluded. Industrial areas are perfect after 5. Sometimes it's just unavoidable. I have no problem lifting my dog up and putting the boots to someone's loose mutt. If it's a bigger dog though fuck all that, I'm not getting bit and my dog will just have to hold his own. A large dog like a rott or Shepard sized dog coming towards me loose and in an aggressive manner would get shot, period. I'm not even going to take that chance. Many dogs though will back down when you stand your ground with them. Some of course wont but in my experiences, most do and I run into it pretty often around here.

I gotta agree pick the hound up and shit stomp the cur into oblivion I also agree with ending an off leash animal to protect NE and mine. I got into it with someone for letting their dog walk into my yard from the st. Asked where the hell the dogs leash is "in my pocket he's friendly" well he got a friendly kick in the ass and that broad got told her and her pointless yapper should either obey the leash law or not walk down my st.

  8. I live in a city where it seems like everyone has a bluenose or red Colby and walks em with out leash on the side walk so I walk mine in the street and I've told a few plain and simple if you don't get a hold of your dog I will run my blade threw em problem solved because I refuse to change my routine for careless pet owners.

Feel like as long as you obey law there shouldn't be a confrontation. After you or your dog handles the offender. Haven't had much trouble in past couple of years tho.

  11. Drive around your area around the times you plan to walk and find a secluded place . If your in the city a elementary/middle school field is always great or a parks tennis court , after hours.

I have a couple of those around here , the school fields are always great because there fenced usually and have plenty of room for a dog to run

Oh dont worry my dog is friendly is the most common response for those who's dogs are off leash as most people do not realize that there are dogs out there that are very dog aggressive hence why the leash law works both ways to protect both parties regardless of who's dog is friendly or not.

No doubt. I hear that first sentence 9 out of 10 times I have an encounter.

I'm guilty of letting my dogs off leash, however I only ever do it on a 6000 acre timber block and all the times I've been out there I've only run into one other person and that was the property owner who gave me permission to come out there in the first place. I can't stand people who let there dogs run up to any other dog on a leash and no amount of "he just wants to play" changes the fact your dog is aggressive. The small yappers are the worst coz the owners think it's funny

Since I've had run ins with off leash dogs I use a bicycle and let the dog run:cool:. I can see more and ride off the opposite way if needed. That was after some guy let his dog slip the collar...

I want to expound on the event that made decide to post this topic.
The other day I was at the park with my mother, niece, nephew, my dog, and their dog. We were sitting in the middle of the park when all of a sudden a big male German Shephard dog came running over and started attacking my pup/adolescent dog. Both of my dogs were leashed of course. I tried my best dancing around the dogs trying to give the off leash German Shephard dog every opportunity to retreat but he kept coming back for more. Finally he decided he has had enough and trotted back to his owner that was 60 yards away or so. Not to mention the jerk keeps his dog muzzled as well! The owner, a supposed friend, started screaming at me that I need to get my dog fixed, and I'm not the alpha of my dog, and he has been wanting to tell me this for a long time! The guy never even came over to get his dog. All the while my niece is crying because an off leash dog bolts over and starts attacking my dog. My Mother has a temper and she exchanged words with this guy as he kept walking away at this point.
This man owns two adult GSD's and always has them off leash, and his male GS has attacked at least 4 other dogs in the park that I know of.
The scary thing is I have been friends with this man for over 3 years, and frequently walked with him before he adopted his male German Shephard. Apparently he has been holding an ulterior grudge this whole time against me and my dog. At least another man in the park came up to ask how my crying niece was. This whole ordeal has left me very upset because of how deceiving I felt this man has been acting to me.

That guy is a douche bag.....wear some steel toe boots and kick the shit out of that dog next time this happens, if he confronts you just tell him it was self defense since his dog was the aggressor and attacked first especially since his dog is off leash.

Around my area, like most of yours, there are parks and walking trails that specifically say all dogs must but leashed. It seems like to 80% of the people walking their dog see those same signs, think it doesn't apply to them. This is pure ignorance, I've had a couple run up on me and my pup in the past. At the time I was ignorant and didn't think anything of it, but now.....I'll kick the shit out of someones "friendly, off leash dog" if it runs up on me and I'll keep walking.
2 weeks ago a friend of mine was walking with her big blue nose and their little lap dog, when this POS was walking with his mutt off leash, keep in mind this is in the heart of the city. The other dog ran up on my friend, my friend stepped in the way to avoid her blue nose from snatching up the little POS. The off leash dog ended up biting my friend on her thigh. The owner of the off leash mutt started to yell and cuss out my friend, then he ran off. She chased after him, while on the phone with the cops, they told her to stay put. She ended up getting 7 stitches and the asshole is probaly some where around still walking his "friendly dog" of leash.
I have ZERO tolerance for dumbass people like that. I personally love game bred dogs like some of you, but we shouldn't be the ones walking in a different location or at a different time. If those people choose to break the rules or assume that all dogs are the same temperament as theirs and our dogs snatch up their POS then so be it. They should keep their dog out of our zone and be leashed with full control or they go walk some where else. Just my opinion, enjoy your walks, I know I'll enjoy mine.
