Dog thieves

There has been a rise in dog theft in my area. I had a dog go missing for few hours. She came home covered in road rash. We think she jump out of the back of a truck.

My question is how does everyone prevent the theft of their dogs especial young dogs?

I'd say the first line of defense would be a legit fence around the property or at least around the yard. A couple man biters wouldn't do no harm either.

 

Cameras. Some obvious ones and some hidden ones. Game cameras would be good, and if you look on craigslist or ebay you can probably find a video system that won't break the bank. I just looked at my local craigslist and there's a 4 nightvision, motion activated (if you want them to be) camera system with a 500 gigabyte hard drive for $150. Put one camera on the driveway where everyone can see it and hide the other 3.


If they don't decide that messing with the 1'st one is a bad idea, you'll be able to see them from the other 3. Put one on both ends of the driveway so you'll get their tags, too.

 

I got a nice costco camera setup with 4 cameras, also motion sensored lights all around. I also have a hunting camera
that is motion sensored in my tree line. I check it about once a week. I keep my barker by my front gate. I sleep good.

i second the camera idea and yes u want to invest in a good one. my buddy has the costo setup. he paid 900 bucks for 12 and u can monitor that from your smart phone whenever u want it is great investment not just for dogs but anything else of value. also make sure you place them in good spots so u get licence plates and good recording of activities.

 

I keep one that will eat someones ass in the mix, if someone gets back there, they will find out the hard way which one it is. On top of that I dont let people here.

 

I have a fully fenced yard. Two dogs on chains, two in pens, one inside, and two yard dogs. My dogs bark at everyone but they if you act like you know them they are sweet.

The cameras are a great idea!

Damn! With all the pictures of the fam with your dogs you put on here, I'd never have guessed that! Excellent camo, if I were going to steal your dogs I'd have been in deep trouble. :lol:

 

Isn't like that with immediate family since we raised it but does not do outsiders at all, especially when on the chain... I been wanting to do the camera idea too just haven't had the $$ to do it lately. Plus my yard is privacy fenced as well. They also ALL bark psychotically when any of them see anything at all move, from people (even me) to leaves blowing around and to top it off, my bedroom window views the yard, I'm a very light sleeper I'll wake up to a mouse fart lol. I'm not saying it's impossible to get jacked but it's not going to be done quietly. Both my neighbors are nosy as fuck too. lol. Nothing will stop a determined thief.

 

With any high value animal, you'll attract attention. 9 out of 10 times it will be someone you have let on your property and already knows the value of what they are stealing, the know the layout of the property, they may know all the security, car you drive, and your schedule. They might have tranquilizers, eyes on your neighbors, a truck rental under a fake name, police scanners, etc...

Point being, don't let anyone know much at all. Because even a loose lipped friend might slip some info to the wrong type in a drunk moment and you can simply count your dog long gone.

 

all i know is, when it comes to having a stranger in my backyard the maneater should be the least of his worries........

 

One of the kids that worked for the fence company that did my yard made a comment that the fence came with a lock, so I wouldn't have to worry about anyone stealing my dog, and about how nice she looks. I told him he better hope she doesn't come up missing. It turned into a bit of a thing.


No one wants my dog, anyway.

 

Well I got one house that's right across road from me, were only two house for about a mile. And it happens to be a Lt for the local sheriffs Dept, that being said,still can never be too careful. I'm glad I don't really have neibhors or I'd be stressed over them and their company knowing I had dogs and wondering if somebody would try something. Cameras are a must, like Agk said a determined thief can't be stopped if you ain't there to shoot his ass

Fencing and cameras are a good start. Also I feel what LWG said and I'm sure most of you understand where that comes from also. Exactly my thinking LWG. If you do have a camera setup, I'll give a tip I've used. NEVER have it wired up to a PC that can be seen by the intruders. Your hard drive will more than likely be gone too. I'd have them wired to a pc hidden somewhere, a good laptop can hold lots and be anywhere.

Also game cameras work on the perimeter, they take physical pics of whats moving, even @ night. A flash sound to an intruder is almost as much trouble as a gun cocking. They know they been spotted. One of my staple rules is never let anyone who you don't trust on your yard, and if your coming to mine I better have had or have access to yours. Even transporters, I'll only use 1 transporter and that's cause I've met and know him personally.
