Quick question hope to get some good answers

Discussion in 'Breeder Discussion' started by Darksidekennel, Jan 12, 2013.

  1. What are your thoughts on taking the
pit dog forward based on show
    performance rather than pit
performance would the true apbt be
    lost this way???

Is the true APBT bred for the show ring? If you based a Border Collie breeding program on show results would you have Border Collies in the true form? The answer to your question is yes..

  4. Look guys here in SA there are so many guys who believe they know everything about pitbulls and pitbull history. I have been reading threads here for awhile now and its completely different to anything they been preaching here and I'm so glad I have found this forum.

  5. That's y I asked the question cause it came up here. alot of guys seem to think that the true Apbt will not be lost and I'm hoping to get a few opinions.

If you are breeding for show, then yes, you will eventually lose aspects of the true APBT. Does that mean you can't find a great dog that is athletic, loyal, loving and full of fire from a breeder that breeds for the show ring? I don't think so. I have a great bitch from show lines that has more energy that a meth head, more drive that I know what to do with, sweet as sugar to humans, athletic and beaufiful as hell.
Is she game? Who knows, she is young and that is one characteristic that I will never test to find out. Do I consider her an APBT? Yes, she sure as hell ain't no bully or mutt.
You can absolutely find a true APBT, yes but you have to know the right people or get one from a peddler who knows the game too.

  7. Thanks riotact that's a good breakdown

If you keep breeding the APBT for the show ring only, in a few generations you will have the equvilent to the American Staffordshire terrior

Nah....confirmation is totally different between Staffs and APBTs. Physically you will have a Apbt. Game/Heart is a passed down trait. He is either born with it or hes not. If He has it. Breed him to another confirmation correct dog then its a percentage game from there if your dogs pass down that trait.. Keep the ones that posses that trait and repeat. And in a show...dog aggression is expected and you will not get disqualified for it in the Adba. Look at the confirmation points on the adba website. It clearly says it. You only get disqualified for human aggression and having your dogs balls chopped off lol.

The amstaff and the apbt used to be the same dog. They starting breeding for the show ring only and ended up with a totally different breed. And have energy and drive doesn't make your dog an apbt. The apbt is a working dog and what. makes it is performance based. if you don't have proven dogs in your pedigree up close then you're dog isn't being bred to the apbt standard PERIOD

It is a percentage game but breeding strictly for the show ring would diminish the returns greatly. The show ring creates consistency for a particular look, which is a double edge sword, conformationally correct dogs that at a greater percentage lack certain traits. Not unlike any other dog exclusively bred to look good. There may be good AST's just not in a sporting percentage. Alot of respect should to a standard that supports diversity not just sameness and the inner qualities that a can't bee seen by a judge.

So Chinaman was a damn near physically perfect bulldog can we agree? If you had a bitch of the same caliber would u not have a show dog that's game as hell?

Nope only a possibility to have one. Chinaman was not the only way that a bulldog has to look to be a perfect physical specimen though. Diversity is a great thing.

Best post so far. Its happened time and time again with countless other WORKING breeds. A major example is the G.S.D. if you look at the working stock from Germany and the American bred AKC show line stock they cleary should be two different breeds of dogs like A.P.B.T. and AmStaffs. The AKC G.S.D. are significantly larger, come with more health problems like hip displaysia and have much weaker tempermants the the WORKING German stock. Whenever you stop breeding for the purpose that was intended you will end up with a different dog down the line.

If chinaman showed up to a confo show missing hair because of red mange then he wouldnt place. AND thats the difference he was a bulldog so he was bred to produce more bulldogs regardless of the fact that he had flaws in his appearance. Now on the other hands in a show breeders hands he would have most likely been a cull because he had a defect that would have hindered him in a confo show.

Yea I know...Chinaman was just a example lol. Breeding two game dogs in hopes of getting a game dog is how having a game dog is accomplished right? So if the just so happen to be confirmation correct....you still wouldn't have a game show dog is your percents fell in your favor? I we have a winner! Lol
