Does anyone on GD use Linux as your primary Operating System? If so what Distro do you use and what has been your experiences with Linux? I'm going to be making the switch in a bit. I just got the Linux Bible 2010 and it came with over 18 different Linux distros. I'm still trying to find the right one for me. I'm leaning toward Ubuntu, Fedora, or KNOPPIX.

Gonna have to cosign with Ubuntu or Fedora. I haven't messed around with Fedora since '05 and used Ubuntu off and on since then. One of my Thinkpads is running Ubuntu Netbook remix. I'm not to serious with linux though, always been a Windows guy and a .Net Windows Forms/ MSSQL developer. Just got into it to learn bash but I really do like the netbook flavor of Ubuntu.

yeah i agree:), go with Ubuntu i just made the switch and it's been working really well for me so far nothing to complain about really. it did freeze on me a couple times in the very beginning but the problem seems to have been ironed out now

I love the fact that I can use the live version w/o installing the OS. I'll check out Red Hat and then decide. Most likely it'll be Ubuntu or Fedora.

I just started looking into Linux a few weeks ago... I was going to try to install it on my xbox 360. Once I realized I was in over my head I installed it (ubuntu) Inside of my windows OS to give it a test drive. It seem pretty cool but I don't know if I could every make it my primary OS.

yep, if you want to switch to Linux, just go for Ubuntu.
It's the most user friendly version IMO.

I'm in the southeast. Started out programming as a kid. I use vb.net and asp.net for windows and web dev but I mainly moved on to a db guy. Mostly MSSQL, have used MYSQL and played around with ORACLE.

originally it wasnt anything like windows, but now it is more user friendly. and it is superior to windows

Yea basically. Its just an Operating System that allows you to use your computer. Windows, Linux, Unix, OSX.

As far as linux being more user friendly than Windows... not sure I agree with that statement but it is more powerful as far as customization and having more control over your system. It also has many flavors that are as light or heavy as you want it to be but a lot of it is moving away from simplicity and becoming more resource hungry.

i meant that it is more user friendly now in comparison to what it was

^^In that case I definitely agree. Linux used to be down right scary to a Windows convert trying to cross over

I'm going with Ubuntu. I love the control compared to Windows. I checked out the older versions of Linux, and damn right it can be scary.

I just wish more people knew about it. I just hate dealing with the corporate crap.

  20. I like the dog in your avatar. GORGEOUS.

Anyway, I, too, use Linux (Ubuntu).
I'm NOT a computer/tech expert person by ANY means (I leave that stuff up to my husband), but we've been using Linux based OS since '06, and have NOT had ONE SINGLE issue yet.

Sure, I cannot use some windows contracted programs like Photoshop, but who needs it when I can do what I need in GIMP?
    And it's FREE!

My computer boots in NO TIME.
I NEVER experience a random shut down or "blue screen".
I just about thank GOD everyday for Linux.
    Such a sanity saver.
