When everything is done and over you might know which puppy is or was the best of the litter. With dogs it is often like with children, almost everyone thinks that their child is the smartest and the most beautiful while the truth often tells otherwise.

Well of course any dog can be the best in the box and you, so I am told, can't determine that until you determine that. I am referring to best acting pup in terms of traits I am looking for that are separate from fighting. I had a male that was completely human shy and had absolutely no prey drive whatsoever but he could fight better (lb for lb) than any other dog I had. He would be useless for obedience, PP, or Schutzhund whereas the pup I just got looks to be well suited. At 8 weeks she was already showing these traits. Outgoing, friendly and fearless towards humans, tons of prey drive etc. She could turn out to be a cur whereas the dog sitting back in the corner could be a good match dog.

That's truly frustrating for your friend. I hope he's fine!

Early eighties. A dog man here put the newborn outside in a kennel. And when buyers came for the puppies, he let the puppy he liked least walk into the living room with him. When the buyers asked why that dog was the only one in the house, he replied that this puppy was his favorite and best puppy. Triggered by that, the buyers really wanted to buy this puppy. He then supposedly had doubts and was eventually persuaded to sell his so-called favorite puppy for a few hundred more than the puppies outside.

    Sheer genius.

My gramps had four pens of rabbit dogs. The two front pens were male and females that were younger, for sale of for trade. The two pens in the back were his males and females that were his top notch stock. A lot of times the dogs in the front pen could earn a spot in the back pen thru their performance.

As a kid I can remember a young dog in that front pen would get scooped up and his ears would be scratched up with a wire bristle brush. After a day or so they would scab over and then when the buyer showed up the scabs/scars on the ears was a tell-tale sign this dog was a go-getter.

He would look you right in the eye, tell you that any man that, buys, sells or trades dogs can't be trusted, holding a beagle and a wire bristle brush.

When selling dogs, just like when selling second-hand cars or whatever, certain sales techniques are used by some. The line between good and bad is thin and some people cross it easily.
Lies and half-truths, you come across them sometimes.

Using common sense and looking at it soberly helps a lot to avoid falling into certain pitfalls. Through trial and error, experience helps a lot to know what you should or shouldn't deal with.

    BTW Great story @slim12

I was kinda sorta partners with a great friend for a lot of years.

I have always said he was the most honest dogman I ever met. On the first day I met him over 20 years ago he said, "When it comes to the dogs every now and then I'm going to shoot you a curve. Your job is to figure out where the truth stops and the lie starts".

When someone forewarns about dishonesty that sort of falls back over into honesty. LOL

Dealing with scams hits close. I had a similar experience, and it was tough. It's a reminder to be super cautious when dealing with breeders, especially from abroad. Sharing these stories helps us all stay vigilant. If he wants to get money back quickly, suggest he try online games that pay real money fast. Good luck!
