Yea where I get my meats isn't a chain store, it's a mom and pops place. $3 a pound beef tips sometimes $1.99 if out of date. I also use ground beef to. That can be very cheap at times. Especially if you get the 70/30 ground beef. It's high in fat but cheap.

well the benefit about being a dr & a rocket scientist is you should be able to affort a quality meat grinder. cabelas has some nice ones, so get the dead deer, quarter it out... and toss in the grinder. make patties & freeze. bone, skin, guts, hair........ everything.

Just FYI bone meal is not recommended due to the way most of its made. It is very hard to digest and if your dog is able to eat bones its best to feed raw bones instead.

Check out how much fat these damn things had on them lol

I've not got enough legs for everyone to get one and still have some left over :)

It's pretty easy to gut/butcher a deer, and a deer would make a huge dent in the feed bill, especially for 3 dogs. Just get as fresh of roadkill as possible or you'll be fucking miserable cutting that shit up.

There are two different types of bone meal. One for Gardens, Toxic to animals, One for consumption. Contains all that raw bones do minus the fat and protein. Calcium is the main component. It's a powdery substance. And you use just a pinch do to concentration.

You're missing my point completely. The way the majority of bone meal is processed and that it's heat sterilized make it very hard to digest and absorb.
Most people use it as an absolute last resort for dogs with no teeth or something, and even still its best to just grind the raw bones down so the dog can eat them.
    Unprocessed > processed any day.

Of course natural raw bones are better. Not arguing that. I do give raw when I have it. Otherwise i supplement bone meal. Not every one has chopped up deer laying around. The bone meal I use is human grade. 1600mg per Tsp. dogs require 1000mg per pound of raw food. So it works just fine. And I read a article stating its hard to digest, then read 50 others saying it's great and actually soothes the stomach and helps with diarrhea. I've had no issues. So I recommend it as a viable supplement to raw bones when raw bones are not on hand.

We didn't either G4G, you ask and people will give you scraps. Especially in your area.
Our raw fed dogs normally get chicken as their bone source, along with alternating beef and pork chunks which are easily found at Walmart. Piggly Wiggly had a killer deal on pork ribs with a lot of meat not too long ago.
Well of course it will help bind up a dog, but that doesn't mean they got anything out of it nutritionally.

Your saying the dog does not get anything nutritionally out of bone meal? Even though it's lab tested 1600mg of calcium per Tsp and Vets recommend it as a highly nutritional supplement for calcium as well as Doctors for humans? That's like saying I don't get protein out of my protein supplements Because it's in powder form versus natural sources of obtaining protein (meat).

Dam man y'all's meats are high as hell!!! Just the other day I was shopping and I found whole chickens for 89 cents a pound, ground beef for 1.98 a pound. I don't feed raw to all my dogs at this time(lacking storage space) but eventually I will be feeding the whole yard raw. Thing is I've learned that most times in the city, they won't give away or sell scraps cheap..... Because the put the beef scraps in with processed ground beef and regrind and package it to add to the bottom line. I've worked in the Meat Department at a small town grocery where we cut our own meat, that's how I source most of my stuff. Friend of mine is a manager now

Did I say that? No. Its a fact its hard to absorb for a dog. I'd rather feed whole or ground raw bone than feed bone meal. If I was forced to only feed bone meal I wouldn't feed raw.

Chicken quarters are 5.50~ for a 10# bag out here. In Phoenix we were paying 7-8$ a bag for the same shit.

Once we get more freezer space raw will be more of a staple for all he dogs and not just the raw fed ones, although you really can't beat the quality and price of some kibbles lol it'll be nice to store much more for the mutts

Well yea you kinda did, "it doesn't mean they will get anything out of it nutritionally". But anyway, So, full bone is easier to absorb that ground down bone? Even though it takes longer to break down a full bone in the stomach? In logic, anything ground down will absorb faster. Less time in break down process. Bone is bone, ground down or in natural form. It's more concentrated in bone meal. Hence why you only need a Tsp vs a Entire neck bone to get the same amount of calcium. Like one chicken leg may contain a few grams of protein but one scoop of supplemental protein can contain up to 30 grams of protein or more.

That's a great theory, IF bone meal was just simply ground bones, but it's not, lol

No, a whole bone that the dog chewed and a ground raw bone from a meat grinder digest at about the same rate depending on that bones density etc. Bone meal is not just ground bone.

The whole point of raw feeding a dog is to get away from the over processed food items and feed items the dog can break down and utilize easier. Go ahead and feed your dog bone meal and protein powder and let me know how that works out for you. Or better yet, just feed kibble because you are going to fuck your dog up...
