Yes, I did. But, that was a lot of years ago and I don't believe he would even place in the champion class now.

When I say dogs are getting too narrow and rangey, I do not mean that I think they should look like Am Staffs instead. The two dogs leftlane posted are down right muscular and stout compared to most ADBA show dogs these days. Most of the show dogs have no breadth to their front ends. They are too narrow.

And as far as what FD posted:
"Theoretically, a thick dog is shorter for the same weight, will retain more heat due to less surface area per pound of weight, will have to work uphill, and will be less agile"

Yada yada yada. I have heard this kind of argument repeated a million times by show people. Sounds good, but taken to an extreme you end up with dogs that look like whippets. Which is what is happening in the show ring now. People who don't have first hand knowledge, greatly over value dancing in the pit, when what is far more valuable is the ability to take and give punishment.

Awhile back in one of Limey's posts he said "You would be surprised how little bulldog there is left to a bulldog type dog when you get it down to pit weight" or something to that effect. And that is the truth. At weight they aren't so thick and stocky after all but they are still durable & powerful. Take one of these show types down to true pit weight and you have NOTHING left.

great post there! Limey does have some posts that make you think lol. i agree with you ben. im seeing some good looking whipets winning lol and its like any person can come and judge these shows it seems like. grant it im new to showing these dogs, but have been to a hand few and observed it for myself. it seems like the there should be a judge meeting discussing these things. im not seeing real bulldogs from real bloodlines placing like the way they should. im seeing show bred APBTs winning. Just for curiosity what would people on here say if there was weight classes to these shows similiar to how the its history called for, so the dogs showing in a event would be looked at with dogs in its own weight and age? for example 12month and over classes 30-40lb range class,40-50 and 50 and over class. then you bring all the winners from those winning classes and judge for the best overall. does that sound stupid or kind of something intresting to have going on in one of the registries or even a brand new registry? i dont have money to start that one though lol. the only problem i see from it is it would take alot longer to do........

not directed at anyone in particular, more of a general statement.
for the folks who might think twice about showing a dog that is not shineyand new, and has some shipping and handling damage, i have shown several dogs with such looks-never has anything been uttered to me in any negative light, never been told we were unwelcome. what im saying is that if you have a bulldog, dont be afraid to show it. if you are, then dont complain about the way things are happening in something that you do not participate in.

You are right. Each judge has their interpretation of the standard. And each judge has their preferences. While they are not suppose to but they do. I know of quite a few people that will not show under certain judges because of their biased picks.

I was told by a judge that he picks based on "Who he would put his money on" And that is how the standard should be according to him.

    Some do, some don't.

Dammit this is Cynthia. I did not look to see that he was still logged on. LMAO

i wish the ADBA had more judges like that. in my opinion most dogs that make champion these days bear no resemblance to actual game dogs, that is the point my friend was making when we were looking at the show dogs.

Ben, I do feel what your saying, and I guess that its the average, cause I know for a fact all "show dogs" don't fit in that category of too rangey or too narrow. Thing is, alot of those Ch's are not conditioned for sport, only looks. When you got a whole litter of dogs your showing, the quickest way to show weight at that point is through the bowl. Alot of people showing there dogs are afraid of muscles on there dog because they think if its too bulky they won't place. Ben, I do believe this is the reason for all the narrow rangey dogs. I really hope some of yall coming to nationals.

i'd love to go and see some old friends but by then the crops will be out around here and we'll be chasing coyotes with our dogs. the staghounds have been waiting all summer to get to work, its cooling off and they're getting antsy, they want to get it on.

Speaking of shows, I'll be going to the ADBA show tomorrow in Oregon (Wamic).

    Anybody else going/showing?

    I'll be a spectator...

  16. IMO my dogs don't fall into the category benthere describes. Here are a few

    G/C 6 Bronson

CH Badonkadonk (aka Katy) She is still very young. Only 11 months old in these pics

    CH Charlie Bronson
    [IMG]

CH Festus Not the thickest dog I own but he is also not a Boogieman dog. He was also pretty young here.

CH Charlie and his brother CH Logan
    [IMG]

Old lady CH Gigi (12 and still a thick old bitch)

    GR CH Lizzy
    [IMG]

GR CH Bronson with a dog named GR CH Isley
    [IMG]

This is some of mine. Some people like 'em, some don't. I've always been happy with what I own and that's all that matters to me :)

I have seen plenty of dogs like benthere describes, but if you go to a variety of shows, you're going to see a variety of dogs, and it's not any "TREND" IMO. Our breed has a diverse variety of looks IMO and each person has their likes and dislikes. I don't particularly care for the type of dogs that benthere describes either.

I was asked to leave the woodstown nj show several years ago with this dog, I guess it depends who's running that particular show!
