    Default Swim keep???

I was wondering have any of you ever used one and what was the rate of success? I heard that 5 minutes of swimming a dog equals to something like 20 minutes on the mill...is there any truth to this? Thanks in advance!!!

soo i would try to find a local creek. ive found that if u find a ravine with a current that meets half way to the doggs chest, it makes for a pretty good work out

Thanks for the info!! Any suggestions on the time? My partner swam his male last month because 3 of his pads blew while being put in (Someone else was involved and the hound WILL NOT walk for anyone but the owner, so the guy drug the hell out of him...) He swam him for 40 minutes at a time...is that too much time?

i use a calm creek behind the farm, and a faster moving river about five miles from the farm, but i always get out there with em and have a little fun as well. they seem to enjoy it alot more and work harder with me participating...plus theres sandbars in that river, so when we get tired a fella and a dog can find some shallow water to sit down, relax and just enjoy the water.
imo swimming is the best exercise for a dog

swimming is the best becuase it works every muscle in the dogs body. we use a 15 foot pvc pipe rigged with a set up to hold the dog in the middle of the pool by there coller. each dog is diffrent but i dont ever swim them for 40min at a time. normaly 20min a dog followed bt the rest of the keep. 40min with most of my stuff wont have anything left by the dockdive after a few weeks.

I am a firm believer in swimming a dog. I would use it about every 3 days and the dogs would love to exercise the whole keep. It kept it exciting for the dog.

lwg use two cinder blocks to hold the pvc in place. drill hole in the middle to thread a bolt so you can fix it in place to put on a lead about 6 feet long. use a coller not a harness on the dog. sty in one end of the pool and bate the dog with a toy at the other end. make sure the dog is well empted out and is at leased 3 hours past there last feeding. dont leave them in the pool more then 20min it is easy to overwork them this way and you need to be 100 focused on the dog and how there acting. nothing a beginer should do alone if you get your ass out here then i will show you.

    Great info Ben!

I saw someone who used these big tanks, we fish people normally use those tanks for outdoor ponds, but the dude used it as a big swim tank for the dogs, which I thought was really neat.

You can usually find those tanks at the recycle center for pretty cheap or on CL. We have lots of them on CL here.

Here is what they look like, chop the top off and you have a good sized tank for whatever

Do how you said with a pvc pipe and hook the dog to it with either a harness or the collar and there ya go!

Water exercise comes in handy with how hot its been here, 116 yesterday and 113 or so today.. :O

I have never done an entire swim keep but i do incorperate it into my regular keep. I will use it as a substitute on weight pull days and i will substitute it for mill work on extremely hot days.

I used every known method there is to condition a dog. I have used swimming. Don't waste your time. You'll congest the dog. Some times bulk the dog if using wrong feed. Stick to a free turning slat treadmill.

^^ you think so? Then why didn't any of the top sporting dogmen use a swim keep?
Only novice dogmen talk or use swim keeps.

First off if you are conditioning a dog in that hot of weather, you conditioning a dog in the wrong time of the year!
Why do you think the sporting season was in the fall?
Blood thinner and less fat in the blood stream from the summer.
A lot of your dogmen in the South which had game cocks (Carver, Boudreaux, etc.)got into dogs because this was often the time the birds were in "Blood Feathers".

Use a swim keep during the time of the season, then compete and which how the dog is congested in a long haul..
Conditioner 2 Thousand has over 100 Keeps from the 1800's to now, from famous dogmen and not so famous, none used swimming in their Keep.
The Book of Keeps is ready for print. You name it, the Keep is in it.

Those who did bring out dogs in the summer, their conditioning was in the dark of night with fans on them. This also is when the shows would take place.
