Default Carpet Mill - Big Rollers or Small?

    Hello,

I was wondering do you find that the 6-8'' rollers on a carpet mill, similar to what's on a slat mill (I think?) work better than the small, 2" rollers like conveyor rollers?

I have seen designs with both types of roller and was wondering which you all thought would be better for future designs, I already made one with the 2" rollers, but they can't be cut and it's far too wide. It works well, but trying to improve for the 'second attempt' lol.

    Thanks.

    My mill-

    (Since been altered slightly)

I'll get a video of it in the morning, it works well. I just want something narrower and taller.

The attachment for hooking on has already been changed so it has longer 'arms' to fit taller dogs.

You can build very good hubs with good slats and good lawn mower wheels the really work nice kinda like the colby mill but just screw the slats on the wheels they last for ever.

Thats the key to a good "free spinning" Carpet mill.... Use a 6-8 inch roller on front and back. and make sure to leave the middle of the front roller alittle higher than the floor the dog runs on. Add alittle to the carpet so you have some sag in it and you will be in business. I always left the carpet about 2 inches from the ground.

Oh yeah and one more thing... Use a heavy, thick carpet so you will not get the carpet slap and it will not bunch up when in use.

3/4 pvc??? Use it on your house not your mill. My rollers are made out of pipe but I use a 8 inch pvc type pipe. Ill put front wheels and tires from a lawnmower or gocart inside the pipe and air them up. It keeps them from slipping and then im able to use some 3/4 inch round stock as the axle. The weight from the rollers help move the carpet when in use and makes it easier on the dog. I get 2 rotations from the carpet mills with a slight push of hand. (not to metion one strong good winded bulldog)

the end roller size will not matter that much...the key is the the roller is placed so the carpet comes off a 1/4" or so above the running surface...then the diameter of the roller from there is only determined by the running surface frame....if the frame is made out of 2X4's plus the thickness of the running surface...the roller will have to be 4-5" in diameter or spaced out so the the lag carpet does not scrape the bottom of the running surface...if that makes sense....

the size of the rollers on an carpetmill arent going to make a difference. i i have tryed both. For over 20 years i have used 2 "n rollers and they work fine
