MONROE -- A pet dog that belonged to a town family died after he was shot with a pellet gun Tuesday. The dog's owners do not know who shot their 9-year-old pitbull chocolate lab mix, Roscoe.

Carolyn Bacarella, of Oakwood Drive, let Roscoe out the back door Tuesday morning like she said she does every morning. When he didn't return, she opened the door and saw him trying to drag himself into the house. He was bleeding from the mouth and collapsed onto the rug. Bacarella and her boyfriend, Adam Santiago, rushed the dog to a veterinarian, who discovered Roscoe's lung had been pierced by a pellet.

Bacarella described Roscoe as a "good boy" with the uncanny ability to understand what people were saying. The 98-pound dog would hog the entire couch and would run upstairs just before bedtime to claim his spot on the bed, she said.

"He's scary to look at," Bacarella said in trying to explain why someone might shoot the dog. But in nine years, no one in her closely knit neighborhood has had a problem with him, she said.

A police officer checked the area, but did not find any evidence.

"Our concern is ... what if they shoot another dog or ... kid?" Bacarella said.
