COLUMBIA, SC (AP) -- A South Carolina man once described as a the nation's No. 2 breeder of fighting pit bulls is getting out of prison on parole.

The Probation, Parole and Pardon Services board voted 5-2 on Wednesday to grant parole to 63-year-old David Ray Tant.

In July, a three-member panel of the board had voted 2-1 to parole Tant. But the split vote required the full board to consider his release.

Tant was arrested in 2004 after investigators removed dozens of injured dogs from his Charleston County property. Tant pleaded guilty to several dogfighting charges, and his 40-year sentence had been reduced to 30 years.

Tant said during his July hearing he is a changed man and won't hurt dogs again.

Board spokesman Peter O'Boyle it will take several weeks to process Tant for release from a prison in Berkeley County.

I know what got him the sentence old tymer.. So r u saying 40 years is a fair senence for booby trapping your own land? surely not. Anyway, glad david is coming home. We got a nice male off him in 1999, AAAx LuLu2. For those of us who have gone through what he has we know what a relief it will be for him to get back home.

yeah i think most of that sentence was when someone who was stealing from him got hurt from a trap he set. Theif got what he deserved IMO

From what I understand, a thief wasn't the one hurt but rather a surveyor just doing his job. My understanding was DT had some dogs stolen so he set traps around his land, one of which the surveyor stumbled upon & got hurt which lead to the investigation & conviction.

nope he was a surveyer, but he came back after work after he seen that tant had puppies. he was sneaking onto tants yard to steal his girlfriend a birthday present and got his ass peppered. he went to the hospital but was released the same day. the hsus coerced the surveyor into playing up the incident to help them put away tant for as long as they possibly could.

I hear ya , and have mixed feelings about it.... Fact is the government plays a mean game.....For all who have never had a boatload of time staring them face to face, don't be so quick to pass judgment. It is real easy to say what you wouldn't do.. But the fact is when most get behind the eight ball..... it is a TOTALLY different story. 99.4 percent of all Federal Inmates cooperated with the Government in some capacity.. FACTS..

My best friend was stabbed in the chest 2 yrs ago during a fist fight with 3 guys. All 3 guys had open cases at the time, all 3 guys recieved less than a 2 yr sentence. Lol the knife came 3 1/4 inch shy of his aorta. At this current time all 3 walk free and all 3 pose a danger to society..... So at what point did dogfighting become a 40 yr sentence. Society is retarded if they think any person is safer after the removal of 10,000 fighting dogs! This shit crazy, the justice system is a huge joke. A lady 5 yrs ago cut her own child's arms off with a boucher knife, she was sentence to 3yrs and psychiatric treatment but yet they can lock up a person who harms dogs. Lol a guy in my town a few yrs back cuts his own dogs head off with a chain saw because he said the dog was possessed and mean, he was sentenced to 11yrs. This system is ridiculous!!!

Nothing personal, but I just wanted to bring up an important point of FACT..directed toward ANYONE who does'nt know Mr Tant personally(including media reporters, investigators, surveyors etc.)

Who SAW him harming dogs?
Who SAW him fighting dogs?
They say they found injured dogs?
...Anyone having dogs knows accidental fights and a myriad of other things happen, will this also lead to anyone who has an injured bulldog, be thought of this way?

It makes me sick...THE POINT IS:
The LAW states: INNOCENT UNTIL PROVEN GUILTY!!!
How can anyone have a fair trial, when the humaniacs go in with their media circus and make a HUGE PUBLIC deal ...AND be allowed to do that???

...anyone who's saying anything about this has no proof...EXCEPT from reading or hearing about it...through 3rd parties and rumor
...anyone who personally knows the man as a friend..certainly would'nt say anything to make his situation worse, would they?

Pleading guilty is usually the ONLY alternative you have(besides the 'other'), when you don't have the excessive funds necessary to fight the accusations....
