Re: Hit or don't hit ?
The water gun thing is a joke, I don't know of any self respecting trainer that would recommend it for a dog with a serious barking problem. I prefer checks with a prong/choker. Obviously not so hard that you constrict the dog's wind pipe, but hard enough that the dog knows that he's been corrected.

Re: Hit or don't hit ?
I would give a shake of the scruff or a smack on the butt, but would not hit the dog in the face or nose.

If you got to ask this question you don't need a dog.

Re: Hit or don't hit ?
If I can't get attention from the dog in question, I'll tap their backside until they're focused but to actually hit my dogs? No. The "scary mom voice" (you know the one your folks used when you were in deep - yeah, that one) works really well at letting them know they're close to pushing the envelope.

Re: Hit or don't hit ?
It is hard work, but whenever you give a command, MAKE the dog do it. Don't hit him unless it is a tap to get their attention. I will also occassionally use the side of my foot to give her a sharp tap to her chest when she is refusing to heel. This means if you are telling a dog to come and he ignores you, tell him NO! and then go to him and make him come to where you want him (this is why I tend not to call my dog from 50 yards away LOL!). Never give a command you aren't willing to see through, otherwise they learn they can ignore you.
Best way to end barking, IMO, is to only give attention when he is calm and quite and you may need to cover his crate with a sheet and only remove it when he is quiet. My dog used to get real excited when I came to her crate so as soon as she started pawing and barking, I would stop and turn my back to her. When she was calm, I would turn around and slowly continue and repeat the action whenever she started to act up. She quickly learned not to act like an idiot.

Re: Hit or don't hit ?
There are more positive ways to get your dogs attention that are more effective and better for your relationship between you and your dog.
Hitting and grabbing your dog by the scuff of the neck is definitely a form of negative reinforcement that could lead to more behavioral issues down the road.

Re: Hit or don't hit ?
The only time I swat a dog on the hind end or get them by the scruff is when I need to show the dog who is boss, That is about the only time I recommend folks to do it as well.

Re: Hit or don't hit ?
I agree, I personally would never hit my dogs on their face or head, I hate it when a dog is hand shy. A shake from the scruff of their neck and a telling off is normally enough.......I think they feel worse if they think theyve upset you than they would with any physical kind of discipline.

Re: Hit or don't hit ?
Well you know I got to thinking and I think I need to clarify what I mean by when I show them who is boss. This isn't for just because the dog has a accident in the house or things of that nature, I am meaning if the dog knows better but shows open defiance or if the dog challenges you by trying to guard the food or take over the couch or something along those lines. All pups will test the waters just like all teenagers will and there are times when they need a smack on the hind end to get their attention and make it click that they don't want to do that anymore.
But the last thing you want to do is over use that and end up ruining the dog, You can't just go and do that for just anything and everything or you will wind up with one of two things. A cowed dog that is miserable and will take a lot of work to bring around or you will wind up with a dog that will out and out fight you and you will end up having to put the dog down. It is a training tool and like most other training tools it is not to be over used and things of that nature. Only use it when needed and never over do it, Use just enough to correct the dog.

Re: Hit or don't hit ?
1) You shouldn't have your pup working a springpole heavily before his growth plates close
2) It shouldn't be so high that he is leaping off the ground for it. 2 back feet on the ground is the rule of thumb.

Re: Hit or don't hit ?
If my dog breaks the rules I make him submit (lay on his back) and if he was really bad I give him a loud but not hurtful slap on the gutt.
