Breeding: How long do dogs stay tied?
At the end of breeding? I should remember from when I did some breedings 10 years ago, but I must be getting old and forgetful.
5 minutes or so?

Just depends on the male. Sometimes 10 minutes. Sometimes 20 or 30.

10 min is the shortest time I've seen dogs tied, and the longest was a little over an hour. It all depends on the male.

Re: Breeding: How long do dogs stay tied?
Thanks. My female is in heat (9 months old) and I was watching her and my 8 month old male pretty closely. They are in separate kennels during the day but go out back together and are 99% supervised (especially since a week ago when they started scrapping really hard). They stay in the back together alone for 1 hour a day but he is in a steel kennel and she is tied out separately.
I let them play today. She was kicking his butt as usual if he got near her until this afternoon. I was in the backyard and all of the sudden she let him mount her
.
I was just worried because this morning they were unsupervised for about 6-7 minutes, but there was no way they could have had sex in that time frame.

You need to keep them totally separated while she's in heat and accepting. If she's not already pregnant from being left unattended it'll happen fast enough with you letting them out together. What's your big plan if they do tie? Rip them apart? Keep them separated.

dogs dont have to tie to necessarily get pregnant . all it takes is one lucky squirt and you could have pups.

Right...I was keeping them separated and closely supervising them together. She was showing no signs of accepting, in fact she bit clean through his ear the other day...all of the sudden out of no-where, she is a French whore. This morning I was more concerned about them fighting and I was inside getting ready for work. I can hear them if they start to scrap and they were quite. I think I am OK but now I am watching them like a hawk.
They will not be together for one second now, believe me.Last edited by Dr_jitsu; 11-14-2008 at 05:11 PM.

they need to be supervised 100% of the time not 99% of the time. That 1% could result in an unwanted litter to two very young parents. I had a female GSD that I though was safe on our deck while in heat. Imagine my surprise when about 2 months passed and I had a litter of five puppies. She had them at my friend's house UNDER her porch...I didn't even think or imagine she was pregnant.
She was a horrible momma; laid on two of the puppies and became aggressive with me over the puppies.
Keep both eyes on her at all time; If need be put her in a room with the door closed and in a crate. And don't trust other people to keep them separated.

Re: Breeding: How long do dogs stay tied?
We saw one of my buddys male stick a female through a kennel and they were kind of spaced apart.. it was like go go gadget we were freakin out and I was disgusted..Anyway he managed to scare him off in time b/c she didn't take..
but that just goes to show how quick/sneaky a male can be and how just how a female in heat be just as quick and sneaky. Not to mention its like torture to let the male be around her.

Yes a female can get pregnant with out tying with a male, you can have what is called a slip mating, which is when the male dog ejaculates but slips out before tying with the female, once the sperm is inside the female thats all that matters.

Re: Breeding: How long do dogs stay tied?
I have a few that get in and get out fast and one that hangs for atleast 30 minutes..... I like the in and out dogs and have never noticed a difference in the amount of pups they have based on how long they tie. A breeding stand is a must have and try and keep ur dogs away from each other unless you want them to breed.... accident waiting to happen.

Re: Breeding: How long do dogs stay tied?
The male ejaculates in 3 segments. Pre ejaculate, the actual semen, then the flush. The purpose of the "knot" or "bulb" is strictly to keep the fluid from leaking out and giving the sperm an opportunity to get to the females uterus. It's funny reading shit from people who have no fucking clue what they are talking about lol.
