    Default Dog chewing TAIL??

Anyone ever deal with a dog who chewed the tip of their tail off?

Ive wrapped it once and it healed completely then again today I walked to her chain spot and she was covered in blood.

She gets exercise every day; hand walking, sprints, and spring pole... I have no idea what to do

You may end up having to dock it if she's constantly chewing on it and it's causing serious issues.

Does she have excessive scratching elsewhere to where it may be an allergy causing her chewing?

You may actually have a case of "happy tail". It isn't always an infestation or allergy. So, try not to overreact and do anything drastic just yet. You may have to later, but don't make any rash decisions to amputate her parts just yet. I know UNO meant that as a possible scenario, and it certainly is, but for now I'd put some antibiotic ointment all around the area, then coat it with one of the thicker ointments such as Corona or even Nu Stock. Give it a week and see what gives.

Of course, one quick trip to the vet for a culture would or should define whether it is something infectious or not. Whether she is itching and/or scratching in other places is a good question by UNO. It can give you a clue as to whether it is an irritation that is spreading. If so, there is surely an infectious cause. No. 1...get a culture. No. 2...try the above that I mentioned.

TDK, would you wrap it? I know I've seen them wrapped before while they heal.

If she's chewing, no, treez. If she is not chewing, I'd still leave it some air, letting the thick ointments be it's cover while leaving it aerated unless she is still damaging it and a soft wrap would help ease the trauma from however she is doing it. One thing I would do is keep her in a sanitary environment whereby such protection from anything vile wouldn't be so required, also.

If a need to wrap comes along, it may be a good idea to invest in a box of post surgical medicated pads to cover before the wrap is applied. I think a culture will show him the route to go, but should it require medicated covering, I think it's the way to go.

I've got one chewing the hell outta her tail. I thought was allergies at first, he coat was very thin on the rear half of her body and she was always itchy and scratching. Changed her food to TOTW and within a week she stopped scratching and her coat thickened back up, but she kept gnawing at her tail, not the tip, the upper half, especially the base of it. I cleaned it up, put Nu stock in it, it healed and fur started growing back quickly. Not even 2 weeks later same thing, gnawing the heck out of it again, just the base of her tail. Her chewing on it has progressively gotten worse, to the point where next step is a trip to the vet.

Excellent. An Elizabethan collar is a good idea.

shave the tail and she if she has got any skin issues. Fungus, allergies or dermatitis... + the elizabethan and bring her inside.

Yea, I have seen her chew at it. Only once before when she was crated. We wrapped it with gauze after covering it with some anti bacterial ointment and it healed. I thought it was a nervous tick or something from being crated for an extended time (12 hrs)while I called away for military duty. But we live in Florida now and shes outside on a chainspot. Shes really only alone at night. but I keep a ball and a rope hanging for her to use if she is bored. Im going to look for a vet in the area to do a culture because im afraid it could be the new environment.

** Edit during the move the mother in law went to pick up dog food and she picked up some grocery store garbage brand Beneful I think? she's been on Blue Diamond Wilderness since 10 weeks old when I got her. Would that have any effect?

If it started around that time, I'd definitely switch back and see the results. I wouldn't be surprised if that was it. Could be allergic to something and she's itching. Just my opinion.
