Start out trying to get em to work a flirt pole. If they won't do that they prob won't work a spring pole. Some dogs don't posess the prey drive to chase or tug. Doesen't mean it aint a good dog, but sure makes it easier to work em.

If you got another dog that will play it may help if it 's seeing.

are you using hide or what? to start out i jus hold whatever is attached to the spring pole. they are more likely to play with you than by themselves. then move it to a flirt and then spring

Get a dog that do love it to show it.
Sometimes they need a view of what to do before doing it self.
Had a dog in the past that would not touch it until he had seen another dog hanging on it for a while, made him crazy.
As soon as he was of the chain he went for the pole but then again some wil never do it.

i had the same problem with my dog and the flirt , i had every thing attached to it from me kids soft toys, bits of rag, inner tubes off a bike and leather gloves and the sh*thead just would'nt bother until one day i got me hands on a rabbit skin and he went nuts for the thing.

so ye just have to find someting he wants maybe a cow-hide use it on the flirt and then put it on the spring!

Try using hides. Mine wont really work the springpole either with just a toy but he loves hides.

You buy three things; Wheelbarrow tire(nylon belted), pool noodle, and like fifty feet of 3/4-1" poly rope... Then cut the pool noodle to size and put it in the tire. Lastly, cut the poly rope to length and tie it to the tire. Then you run around the yard hooting and hollering with it. Swing it around and run dragging it and throw it. Then throw it and keep them from it. Play fight and slap box and hold them down and make it a game. Then give them time alone with it. After that, hang it on a limb and start playing with it the same as before (using the same key words)

LMAO @ mlmaas n deadgame33...good stuff right there
And if he can't handle the Tx Pete then he's a cur

Seriously tho. I use a rope toy, similar to the methods above, play tug with them. Once they enjoy that I hang it on the pole and then they play. I am wanting to try a hide out but haven't set the pole up since the move.

when i first got my older dog into flirtpole, i used a fuzzy long toy and put squirrel scent on it. it drove him crazy. then i switched over to cowhide, which he loves. to get my pup started on it, i tied him up and let him watch my older dog go for the flirtpole. That got him started on it. then to get them started on the springpole (used a hide), i did just enough flirtpole with them to get them excited, then set them on the springpole. they both love it. now i can't keep either one of em off a hide no matter where it is.

so either try a toy with some animal scent on it, a cow hide, and/or letting him watch another dog work it, usually helps.

I start mine on ropes and hides from an early early age. Buy the time there a year the rope is like crack to them lol... Like what was said earlyer some dogs just will not take to it. I have one that will go till he drops with a flirt. But will not piss around with the spring for more than a min or two. The spring is a good tool but one that is unnessisary. If the dog will Walk, Flirt Drag, fetch, swim, Mill and/or bike you will be able to put him in shape no problem. Every dog is different its up to the owner/handler to get the most out of the dog. I was told that this can be a sign of intelagince,If you cant seem to get a dog to work. The dog is outsmarting or out willing you. You have to then ask youreself.......Is this hound smarter than me??... If you cant except the answer yes...You WILL find an effective way of working the animal.
