Hot weather coming up what should we do

Discussion in 'Dog Discussion' started by sedaliapitbulls, Apr 13, 2006.

  1. Hey guys it is starting to get hot. What should I do to keep my dogs in the best of health during the summer why I am at work. Other than keeping plenty of water on hand.

Give them shade, a well ventilated dog-house, fresh water every couple hours and the kiddy pool in the chainspace works well too ;)

This is a reminder to everyone, that extra weight on a dog is unhealthy, especially in the summer time when it really takes its tole on them. Trim the dogs down, cut most of the fat off, they will thank you for it!

Man, I live in Phoenix, az and its starting to get hot, today it got to 85f. I currently own a neo mastiff and recently got a apbt, before I used to have a male and female neo mastiff, they are big , drooling dogs, so they are out 24/7, when its gets real hot outside I use a 10 gal cooler conatainer, it keeps the water cool all day long and i change it sometimes twice a day , because the neo leaves a ton of drool in there, I also use a portable cooler , can leave it on 24/7 (it uses min elec, works with water), I dont know about this summer though , im worried my apbt will chew on the elec cable lol, will see.

I bought a cooling mat last summer for my GSD and she loved it. I am going to set it up for sweetie this summer. Its a plastic type bed with a special kind of foam that always stays a couple of degrees cooler than the air around it. When its really hot I lay on it too. You can use them outside, but can't keep them in the sun (they warm up). You can't use them if your dog will chew them though. I think they're called canine coolers. Really pricey, but work great.

I built my kennel for the outside dog under a red bud tree. It shades his whole area and is the shortest tree in my yard so I don't have to worry about lightening strikes. He gets fresh water twice a day too.
