If I had a dollar….

Discussion in 'Breeder Discussion' started by Rollsroyce, Apr 7, 2024.

  1. For everytime I asked about purchasing a pup and I’ve been told it doesn’t matter which one I choose because at 8 weeks you can’t tell if dog will be a good hunter or not.
I usually get told the breeder is going to keep all but 2 , or all the males, etc.
My thought is if it does not matter at 8 weeks which pup you choose than why not let me have 1st pick seeing how I am paying $$$ for it.
My belief is of course it matters and the ones the breeder “gives” up are ones that show no interest in flirt pole, not showing lots of aggression towards littermates, undersized,
Shys away from loud noises/ unknown objects etc. my belief could be wrong , what do others feel?

    As a breeder,
I will ALWAYS keep what I deem as my picks of a litter. Don't matter to me that someone is spending a little money on one pup maybe even 2. I'm invested in the ENTIRE Litter as well as the rest of the family so that little 1 or 2 pup purchace price means very little to almost nothing in the larger scheme of things. Doesn't give the buyer any rights or anything like that because you're buying a piece of MY pie.. (or insert any other breeder where MY is).
It would be like you going to McDonald's and feeling you're entitled to stock options because you bought a burger. Lol.

I believe every one of them (my own, I don’t speak for others) has a good chance with proper upbringing to be great in the right hands though all surely will not make the grade because everybodies bar is different.. However, a breeder will know his family better than anyone else will and particularly traits a pup shows that one may concider "good signs". Nothing is ever cut and dry like that though. You'll get shy ones that'll grow up to be destroyers that no other dog scratchs back too and you'll get some that bullied the litter as pups cur out as adults. Pups are a real crap shoot if your picking for future winners in both the box or the show arena IMO.
What they do as babies don't really equate to what they'll be or do as they grow up and become adults.

    Well said.

If I had a dollar.....for every time I heard about 6 and 8 week old puppies that had to be separated and then two years later, they have no interest in getting back together. (in so many words)

My buddy use to say give me the scrawniest, ugliest, next to nothing-est puppy in the litter. At least then I won't be disappointed, I can only be pleasantly surprised.

It really does not matter but like AGK said you are buying what someone is selling, and they get to choose what is for sale. Some breeders make their picks early and some say I will keep what's left. Some will give up their pick for could extra dollars. I think most every situation can be different.

For the most part Mr. Mims picked out your puppy for you when you came to buy one. I remember there was a guy who didn't want the one that was offered to him and made the same argument that he should be able to pick out what he is buying. Mr. Mims skipped right over the part about this is what available and this is what you can buy and went all the way to I don't have anything for sale. It was nice talking to you. And from that point you were forever banned.

The best the buyer or the seller can hope for is the warm fuzzies. LOL

In less your buying a grown dog. Your investment is being made to the person not the pup.

    Damn!

This is philo-so-phizing at its very best.

People should write this one down.

So simple, just a handful of words, but says so much.
