How do yours do in an outdoor kennel?

Discussion in 'Dog Discussion' started by billywaters, Dec 13, 2023.

  1. Mine (1 dog) will be in an outdoor kennel around 5 or so hours during the day, and then in the house at night.

I’ll reinforce it best I can to make it chew, climb, dig proof etc but looking for pointers on keeping them safe while in the kennel

curious what has worked and what hasn’t

    A couple options.

The $600 welded wire panels are really nice and for the most part a dog will not tear thru them.

They have yet to make a chain link panel a dog can't buzz thru with minimal effort.

There are some climbers but not near as many as there are diggers.

Most of dogs have been on chains so only fought/used kennels sparingly.

I use the cheaper 10X10 chain link pens. I line the inside of the panels with cattle panels. (They are 4ga wire and I have not had any dogs get thru them)

I run a 2ft piece of wire along the bottom and pour bag concrete on it to stop the escape digging.

I have never owned a climber, and have only seen one that had to have a top.

I think AGK has some nice setups.

The Garner video shows some nice outdoor kennels.

I just have regular old Tractor Trailer Supply welded wire Retriever kennel panels. The mutts will bend a bar here and there but I've never had one escape or get to it's neighbor. I bury paving stones around the inside perimeter to discourage diggers and I put a 5x6 panel attached as a ceiling to make it basically a cube.

I have five 5'x15' runs and 2 chain set ups. I use the side panel of one dogs kennel to start the next dogs kennel. So back to back basically. block their view of each othe by using 6' privacy fencing panels. Chewers go in the side that have kennel paneling instead of the side that has wood privacy fencing. They will however pull planks down off it or chew on it occasionally so those do have to get replaced as needed until I find a better material to use. They still can't really get to each other when they do get a slat off or 2 since there is still a wire kennel panel seperating them too.

I plan on moving my whole set up around in the spring to where they all have nothing impeding their vision on all 4 sides since they won't be sharing a wall anymore when I spereate them. It'll be a chore for sure. I do have a few 10' regular chain link panels on a few kennels but I put my maniacs in the kennels that have the wire side of the walls so they don't kennel fight, they cant see their neighbor. I don't recommend chainlink fencing with this breed but I've used these particular panels for quite a few years and never had an issue. I wouldn't get anymore that's for sure and they'll get phased out eventually or used for a puppy pen at some point.

Appreciate the compliment Slim. It's a continuous work in progress. It ain't nothing special but I keep it clean and they don't escape or kill each other through the kennels so it definitely serves its purpose. The dream has always been to put up a 12' x 26" building and connect the kennels to it. Do 5'x5' kennels on the inside where it could be heated so that the dogs and I can better tolerate the long winters here. they'll have 5x5 indoors and 5x15 outdoor. All it takes it a extra 10k. laying around not needed to accomplish lol.

Won't get done under the current administration, that's for sure.

This is a few years old but the only thing that's changed really is the doghouses.

Build it from durable and sturdy materials and make sure they cannot escape at all times. Kept them in kennels day and night for almost 30 years to our complete satisfaction. Concrete floors (easy to clean) and insulated dog houses for the cold winters are recommended.

Shit was so much better when all you needed was a plastic barrel, axle and a few feet of chain lol

    It really was.

For a comparison, where all 5 of my runs are, used to be just 1 dogs chain spot before the tethering law went into effect. These humaniacs and their dumb ass financers lobby for ridiculous things and new ideas are thought up by brainless people every day in the name of animal rights. The dogs will never be better off because of them or the nitwit laws they come up with in the name of "saving" them.

  7. Some great suggestions.

My ultimate is to have like an indoor kennel that’s outside, heated and well built.

I’n my area we can only have dogs on chains while you are out there with them so that’s not an option, but would be a lot easier if it was.

Magnum 10x10 kennels are the way to go.

Yep on the tethering laws. We have it in a couple counties surrounding us but we have a few avid dog hunters with some clout in our area. One has a number of top notch coon dogs and they are on chains. When he is retired or no longer hunting I feel like they will seize that opportunity.

I have two regular 10X10 chain link kennels with the inner walls lined with hog/cattle panels. I have the door trimmed down a so I can step over but they can't dig/chew out.

The options are limitless and there is really only one rule. If you take a shortcut that dog will find it. Guaranteed.
