Electric fencing

I want to put up a new fence for my dogs and im thinking of running electric through it to protect the dogs and to keep unwanted people out of my yard. Has anyone had any experience with this type of set up? Did it work well for you? How many times did your dogs hit the fence before they learned? Is there potential hazards that i should be worried about?

Basically any tips or advice would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

 

Well at first I thought you meant running a normal privacy fence and lining the top with "hot" wire so people peeking over your fence uninvited get a shock. However when you are asking about the dogs hitting it before they learn I am lead to question, do you mean just an electric fence? If so, dont waste your time. So many problems with them which include but arent limited too....

Dogs chasing an object and leaving the shock zone no problem, then not wanting to cross back in.

Also other dogs/animals can still come in your yard and injure your dogs.

Electric fence alone is not enough to stop many dogs, let alone members of the "pitbull" family and "bully breeds".

However, if your talking about running a hot wire above a privacy fence and below (so you cant dig under)....I think thats a great idea and have thought about it myself.

 

i have an one around the top of the chain link that i have because they like to jump it and it works great,, they hit it once or twice and that it they won't go near it to jump it,, great idea for lining your fence on top or bottom,, i did the top to keep them for jumping and the bottom to keep them from digging and other than chaining them it was the only way i could stop them,,,works great,,,,,i did the shock collars with the boundry thing and once they figured out they can run through the shock zone it was over,, my electric setup at tractor supply company was like 40.00 but i have alot of insulators,, for alot of fence

 

well i have a chian link fence and what i did to make them not dig or jump over it, i went and bought a shock collar electric fence system, and set it up about a foot & 1/2 from the chain link fence so if the did try crossin it, they was still gettin shocked, worked very well haven't never had any problems and i don't even have the shock collars on them now or the electric fence

 

I think there might be some confusion about the terming here. It sounds like the OP is talking about an actual fence with an electric current running through it. Not that invisible fence stuff which is generally worthless for a high-drive dog.

To answer the original question, I've heard you have to go through permits and zoning and all kinds of fun stuff if you want an actual electric fence. Lots of people use hotwire, though.

 

i was upstate brought my dog with me had to sleep in the cattle fence while i stayed up there (electric) every time a dog or person walked past zapp! not affecting him didnt care still did it

 

u must have been grounding out somewhere because mine will squeal when they hit it,,,happened once or twice and now i don't have to worry with it,,butt the boundry type shock collars were a waste of money when it comes to mine, hell my big one sit right on the wire that was buryied while the collar was poppin and did nothin but a little foaming at the mouth,,,i was like that was a waste of money,,,so got the hot wire electric fence and it was the aggoney of defeat, and i won

 

I tried the underground fence thing with my older dog a few years ago and it didnt work. He just bolted through it. I would never trust it for my pit. Besides it would still allow for people to come into my yard take the collar of and take her out.

Im putting up a new metal fence around my yard. I guess i didnt word it very well the first time. I was asking if i could run the wire through the actual fencing to have a current going through the whole thing. Ive decided against that idea though after talking to a few people.

Im going to try the wire at the top and bottom though. Do you have to have 2 different chargers for that?

 

You should be able to use only one charger. If you look on the package of the charger it will tell you how many of feet of wire it will cover, just make sure you buy one the correct size, it should only take a small one though. We use them for the cattle and there are some that can handle miles of wire.

 

just one charger and it will work great,, thats what i did,,, the make insulators that clip right on the chain link and it only takes a few minutes and you can string the wire
