My dog killed a raccoon in the park at around 8:30AM. It was a snowy day so relatively dark I guess.

The thing is the raccoon didn't fight back much, as he attacked it from behind. I didn't get to save the body of the raccoon, should I be worried? What precautions should I take.

I'm not a wildlife expert but I think if your dog is current on rabies, it should be good. I'd give him a treat and tell him good boy.

Rabies or distemper. More than likely distemper. If ur dog is current on shots u should be fine.

day time raccoon and docile . i would watch the dog and keep it away from others for 10 days . i shot a con 1 time that was sick and cooking at my dogs . it was slow and it seen me but it still kept coming . shot it and burned it . 30 years ago a skunk bit my dog at night it had rabies . it takes 10 days to know if they're sick . they can be mean or docile .

If you dog regular on shots it should be fine, but still it would be good if you observe him for a few days. I don't want to scare you but I had lost a dog to rabies couple of years back. She was attacked by a raccoon that was prowling in our yard during daytime. After that incident I phone the raccoon removal service whenever I find one in the vicinity of my house because it is illegal to kill them in Toronto.
Raccoons that are sighted during daytime are said to carry rabies so you should take extra care of your dog.

Even having a rabies vaccination is not a sure thing if it is rabies, sometimes the rabies vaccinations don't work. Its not uncommon for a coon to be out that late in the morning but not that common either. During this time of the year they usually don't travel far from their den tree depending on how cold/warm it is. They will fight back, like everyone says keep an eye on the dog.

Coonhound paralysis is another thing to watch out for.
