Quick question guys (puppy's)

Ok guys my brothers pitbull has had a litter of 9 puppies. Out of the 9 there's only one male. So in total 8 females and 1 male. Is there a reason for this? Thanks

 

I don't think there is a reason that can be proven. My personal thoughts is it is due to what point in the heat cycle they are breed. I think the earlier in the cycle the more females. The later the more males. I think it's a response to nature and haveing a balanced population. I could be wrong as a dog with 3 heads but it's my opinion.

This is what I have read as well, but don't know if it is correct. Seem that would be a relatively easy experiment....

There was a few guys I know that raise hog dogs that were going to try it but I never heard if it worked.

Try it for what reason, to get what sex? I've just been talking to a breeder and he said it's not true he said if that was the case every breeder would be doing it to get more money from the pups has females fetch more in anybreed. So I'm still confused 9 pups and only 1 is male it's crazy.

 

I've never looked at it as more than just nature's roll of the dice. I personally have never had more males than females in any litter I have produced and i have bred dogs on day 8 of their cycle as well as up to day 21 with a particular bitch and still have always had more females per litter.

 

Well I'll say this, I have a bitch that's a little over 4, been bred twice, in 2 litters she's had 13 males and 1 female.

 

But on the other hand, most my bitches I've had over the years have had more females than male pups. Normally at about a 3-1 ratio

 

The guys I spoke of were going to breed late to try to get more males. Most hog doggers prefer males due to the heat cycle putting a dog out of commission.

Well much as with humans it's a 50/50 chance as to what each pup will be. There really isn't a reason as to why a dog would have either sex more so than the other. Something I've been told but have no idea how accurate it is so don't hold me to this, Is that where it differs from humans to dogs is that the female also plays a role in the outcome of the sex of each pup where as in humans it's us guys who determine if it's going to be a boy or girl.

Another thing I was told that may or may not help is before you make a breeding research back further than usual and see if you can how the breedings tended to go, Did the dog have more males, More females, kind of even split and things of that nature and select your dog to breed to accordingly if it appears your not getting the desired results. Again though I don't know how accurate that is because I myself have never done that where I can say for definite.

 

I have also had more females than males in every litter all but one.
