we were at dog shelters and found this verry cute and loving dog. they told us she was a boxer mix. we believed them so we adopted her. We did alot of research of what she looks like and we think she is just a pit.We also took her to 3 diffrent pet staores to meet and great people and everyone thought she was a pit. I can get pics up sometime today when i get them developed.we know nothing about pit bulls so we need advise on how to train her or any other advise you can think of. We want to keep her. we dont want to take her back and have her fall in the wrong hands. she is about 4 months old and almost potty trained in 3 days only 1 little mistake yesterday night. (my falt). we also have a 3 year old jack russlle they love each other. Thanks so much.

  2. first off, welcome and kudos for adopting... the world needs more people like ya'll
secondly, you've come to the right place for your pup... this site is full of information... since it would be a li'l difficult explaining everything you need to do for your new pup, i would suggest doing a forum search for whatever you have questions on... im pretty sure just about every topic on these dogs has been discussed so u should have no trouble...
can't wait to see pics of ya'lls new little one...

Great job on rescuing the dog. I just want you to know that the majority of people have no idea of what a pit bull looks like. The dog may very well be a mix, try to post some pictures when you have a chance. Another thing, if the dog is a pit bull, you will want to supervise it while playing with your jack russel. Even though it was raised around the dog, it may get mad one day and hurt it. Never trust a pit bull not to fight. It is all pit bull owners responsibility to take precautions concerning their will dogs's fight.
Please, do not get animal and human aggression confused though. They are two completely different things. Have fun raising the dog and feel free to ask any questions that you may have.

Here are 2 pics let me know if you need anymore to tell. They said she was a "boxer mix" But i talked to someone that owns a pit and they said she was a pit. I think they said that to get her a home. I lover this girl to death either way.

Welcome! you will learn alot here! She looks pit to me, what beautiful brindle markings! Alot of shelters will say they are mixed with something else to get them adopted! Check out my gallery, see the dark brown and white bigger dog Cali, my friend adopted her from a shelter in Florida they told him she was a beagle mix!!!

The fact is, you will never know. I've grown up with this breed, & I myself have been completely fooled. The worst was a black lab/boxer mix that looked identical to many "pit bulls" out there. The thing is, they people had the parent dogs so there was no question. I will never say 100% that a "pit bull" in a rescue is 100% "pit bull" b/c in reality, there is no way to tell. Hell, most claimed 100% "pit bulls" aren't even true "pit bulls" but are crossbred mutts mixed to obtain certain desired traits that one thinks a "pit bull" should have.

Nonetheless, he's a gorgeous dog & I wish you many years of happiness & no so many chewed up shoes. ;) Good luck with him. And IF people think he's a "pit" then remember to train him well & keep him on his best behavior so as to be a role model for the "pit bull" breeds.

And welcome to the site! There truly is so much to learn here--from traits of gamedog bloodlines to what kind of food is best to vaccinations needed to odd behaviors your dog might exhibit. So have a seat & stay awhile! :)

  19. Welcome to the site!

I am happy to hear you have given a living chance to another being!

First off, you cannot assume your dog is a "Pit Bull" (hereforth an APBT). Many breeds resemble the physical characteristics of our breed. Your dog could be a Staffie, Bull Terrier, Presa Canario, boxer-mix, etc. One thing they all have in common is the need for exercise and human contact.

You have started on the right foot by house training and introducing another animal into his life. You will need to train him on leash walking, basic commands (sit, stay, NO, eat, etc.) and what is expected of him as an adult (i.e. not to lay on sofas, drink from toilet, wait patiently for food, etc.). In addition, you need to introduce him to all kinds of people and environments. This will reduce the chance of unexpected events.

I hope this help a little.
