Do you feed more during hotter months

Discussion in 'Health & Nutrition' started by BlueDiamond2012, May 21, 2014.

  1. Working dogs, or just dogs that get a lot of exercise that may lose weight during summer months, do you feed a little more each meal?

Yea, i mean to maintain weight it's a juggle between calories in and calories out. The more calories you're burning, the more calories you need to maintain weight. Vice versa, if your dog is getting considerably less exercise for whatever reason, in order to maintain current weight you'll need to cut back a little.

I've always fed less in the summer. I feed more in winter to help keep a little extra fat on em to help fight the cold. I've never heard of anyone feeding more in summer.

I could see how in certain climates it would make sense to feed more in summer because its not ungodly hot

I feed a little less in Summer, and ideally a feed with a bit less fat content. They are usually less active in severe heat, and the extra fat won't help get them a little lighter after being Winter thick. It's a process we go through each year. Slowly thin them for Summer and begin a feed with a little less fat. You just feed to maintain what is good for the season thereafter, watching their weight each day. Little adjustments when and if necessary to maintain proper seasonal weight.

Always less in Summer. My dogs are pretty active no matter the weather so I feed the same fat content year round just less in warmer months.

As a rule of thumb, yes. But not during the hot months like the OP asked. Less food in the summer. Winter they need extra fat on them for warmth, in the warmer months, it's totally opposite. Reference TDK's post for a perfect explanation.

My feed is based on activity, summer or winter, hot or cold. The winter time they tend to get a little more but even more if they are working. And again it depends on the dogs themselves. I got to littermates that are exact opposites. I feed one nearly twice what I do the other. One runs the chain for what seems like 23 hours a day. The other just sort of hangs out. Feed amounts are different. S
