OK,,,,so this is just my opinion and I'm intilted to it.I've been into the bulldogs since 1989,,,I've been on tons of yards,,,mostly in the 90's,,,talked to tons of dogmen,,,,studied the bulldog types. That does'nt make me an expert but I kind of figured things out.....Back in the 60's and 70's we did'nt have fila's,,pressa's,,corso's,,NEO's,,even rotties,,etc...We had pitbulls,,boxers,,BULLMASTIFFs,,enlish mastiffs,,GREAT DANES,,saint bernards,,band dogs etc..
I think the first AB's were mostly bullmastiffs and pitbull with some english mastiffs and maybe some big boxers. Then as time went on and some pitbulls lines got BIGGER waaaay more pitbull was added.Bandog added. Then the breed populated enough I think some were bred for head size and over all size say the johnson types and others were bred by working dog bulldog guys that added waaay more pitbull type say the painter AB's.
Hermes had some HUGE OEB olde english bulldogs,,,,I always wondered how he got them so big,,,the first hermes dogs were pretty rough dogs.I heard there was some saint bernard in them LOL.

English isn't my native language and I explained myself wrong there I see now. She has a lot of kc in her anyway, that's a fact.

I could be off on what breeds or the amounts as I was'nt there at there beginnings. There's just no way such an impressive looking dog(AB) was hidden for even 100 years. You can tell sporting men bred them,,they have that harder gamey build,,amped up alertness,,more active then say a family bred bullmastiff.Bullmastiffs at one time were bred very gamey.
John doors bred a HUGE pit,,,they were these BIG VERY athletic looking dogs without the bullmastiff,,AB,,NEO,, look,,,meaning they did'nt have that super thick look.I always wondered how they got so big but kepted that sleek pitbull look......I heard he used GREAT DANES which made perfect sense. These early doors dogs were jacked and very tall. After doors sold off his stock I noticed his line was getting that thick AB look.
The naturally HUGE pits I think are just bandogs with alot of pit in them.Every now and then you'll see a 75LB pit with 55LB litter mates.Any bigger then 75LBs I start to question the breedings. Some colby dogs are pretty big,,,the first redboy dogs coming from colby dogs were big,,maydogs are big,,hammonds dogs,,,there all normal big.

I like AB's,,I like the way some of them are bred,,big rough bulldogs used on big hogs.If I ever move out to the boonies I would have one.Much smaller pitbulls or bull&terrier works best for me right now.I still like all the working dogs.....I've noticed the hardcore bandog guys have really come along way since the 70's,,80's and even the 90's.Some of these bandogs are scary F***ing MONSTARS lol. Some of these guys have added herder breeds like BIG dutch sheperds.Who would have ever thought adding police type herders to a huge bull bandog. The herders are very smart dogs and aggressive.I would say there mostly just breeding BEST to best,,most healthy,,perfect x-rays,,BIG,,best workers,,,those are nice dogs if your looking for a huge crazy MFer.You just better no how to contain them.
