if I was just starting and thinking of getting serious I would chose an individual dog, only after researching and learning what to look for. Ten learn specifics about w/e dog came to mind so I know what to expect from his pups and go on from there.... ie.. raising the pups and seeing where they excel and where they lack..starting of with just a line in mind seems like too large of a blanket

For me gameness is the will to dominate vs self preservation/survival. I believe there are levels to it, or degrees and the same dog can demonstrate a different level at different points in time. This is not a fact and it's an age old debate. I was speaking towards rock n rye's comment on how giving a dog the worst conditions to survive might make it more game (I know he does NOT agree and neighter do I). Many old timers believed just by being there with the dog enhanced its performance. Maybe kept them focused and confident or comforted enough to carry on.

I feel gameness is illusive. Any dog willing to go has the will to dominate. It's just a matter of when, or if, that will to dominate is replaced by the will to survive. I think Tant said he preferred stupid dogs because they were less likely to stop when they're hurt. I'm sure there is some truth (at least for him) in that. I think he said they were too stupid to quit.

Everyone needs to form their own opinions. There's a ton of differing views on what gameness is or isn't. Personally, the first thing I'd look at in buying a dog is if the dogs behind them are competitive and exactly how competitive they are. If a dog is swimming across on its belly at 5 minutes for the courtesy, its all good that the dog is so game but it cleary isn't built so well in more pressing areas.

i understand when people talk about smart dogs they mean head dogs .
and when they talk about a stupid dog its a chest and leg dog ...

meaby its going a bit of topic
i would choose a line with chest and leg of course ....if you make mistake's there in breeding .
the head dog wil pop by itself i qeuss
the meaning of the spons is . that he is coming better out of the corner then when he went in by the way

Danny B, that's a nice post. There are parts to which I differ, but I don't always have to agree with every word of a post to respect the post. Yours was one of those.

GR CH's Buck and Sandman were lacking? Sometimes styles and other attributes tend to negate each other.

Jimmy Boots and Benny Bob lasted around 2 hours. I don't think anyone could say they lacked roughness or mouth.
