Car Sickness

Discussion in 'Health & Nutrition' started by Gamekeeper, Nov 29, 2005.

  1. I have a 12 week pup that gets car sick and hurls every time I try to take her anywhere. I've tried building up her tolerance starting from just backing out the driveway but I'm not having any success. Ultimately, I'd like her to actually enjoy going with me like my other dogs, but at this point, I'd settle for her not puking. Anyone know of any effective remedies? Dramamine? Reglan? Something natural? I'd like to take her to the show in Bushnell but it's a 2 hour ride and I know we'll both end up hating the trip. Thanks.

  2. it may just be because shes young... when my steele and diegoh were young they would get car sick but as they got older theyd be fine

Try some Diphenhydramine (aka Benadryl) about 30 min. before you go. The correct dosage is 1-2mg per lb of body weight. Since it's a young pup, you're better off with liquid to get the dosage right. Tell me what your dog ways & I'll help you with the proper dosage.

Rescue Remedy. Some people claim they can see a difference after just one dose, I found that it needs to be given once a day at least 3 days prior to travel.

Also someone in the linked thread mentioned Acepromazine, though I've heard mutterings that it's been backordered indefinately. So not sure if it's true just yet, just something I've heard so I wouldn't count on that one at the moment.

I had a client call asking for a dosage of Benadryl to give their dog who was freaking out in the car (they were on a LONG trip). The neurologist told them Benadryl doesn't work like that for dogs. I've never, myself, tried it so I have no clue. But this neurologist is one of the leading in the country so I'd tend to believe him. Not knocking you or anything, just what I've heard.

  7. Thanks to everyone for their suggestions. I have Benadryl on hand so I'll give that a trial run. She's about 8 kgs, Mia, so 25 mg ought to be a good starting point? Hopefully, she will outgrow it! Hope to see some of you at Bushnell.

Good luck gamekeeper. I hope she outgrows it for your sake. ;)

Give your pup Dramamine at a dosage of 2-4 mg/lb. You can give it with or without food anywhere from 30-60 minutes before traveling.

Be sure not to feed or water the pup before you go on a trip! Some dogs aren't actually car sick (motion sick) and they just get super anxious in the car. The best cure for that is small trips (minute or two) to the corner store and lots of positive encouragement. I've seen far more cases of dogs that get anxious then car sick. Most will outgrow with positive car riding experiences. If that doesn't work then obviously the dog is getting motion sickness and everything above is right on the dot. Just thought I would share an alternative approach :)

    Regards
