Tryign to help my 4 year old dog with seizures

Discussion in 'Health & Nutrition' started by carmelsmama, Dec 23, 2013.

  1. My dog is 4 years old and for the last 3 years since just before my son was born my dog started having seizures and most of the time its just before she goes in to heat. We have taken her to the vet and they said to just give her bendyral but in the last month they have been getting worse. So i am looking for a non drug way to help her. Please someone help me.

What kind of food is your dog eating? My sister had her dog on Benefull and her dog had seizures about an hour after eating and... on seizure meds. I took her off it when she went on vacation and put her on a great quality dog food and never a seizure again. Just from a food change. Wellness Core dog food duck is what I had her on with canned food of the same mixed in too. Good luck with yours.

Same here. My dog stopped simply switching from Canidae to Evo. Shes now on Orijen and still seizure free. All the medication in the world didnt seem to stop her from seizing. A grain free kibble or prey model raw might help.

  4. If seizure is persistent better to get another opinion from another vet. I cannot afford to see my dog having seizures so it is best still to consult a vet. I know it's kinda pricey but with some tests I know that a great veterinarian would finally explain to you the reason behind seizures. I don't think it is normal so I will still consult a vet.

Good organic mj tinture helps my moms dog with similar issues ... find adding 1/2 tsp on top of her food she been siesure free ...much better then meds and is totally non toxic... if it does not work no harm... i would seek another opinion... as it seems ur vet is freakin moron..

Most vets are going to suggest phenobarbital or potassium bromide for the control of seizures. IME unless you go to a neurological specialist and spend thousands of dollars, the vet will simply diagnose epilepsy and be done with it. No cause is determined.

In addition to diet change, melatonin, valerian root, essential oil aroma therapy, rescue remedy, etc. Can all be used in hopes that your dog won't hit its threshold and seize. Avoid treats with dyes and chemical preservatives if you give them. Keep valium around to insert rectally during a seizure. I know you said you wanted to avoid drugs but if the dog is having grand mals, youre gonna want to bring the dog out of it.
