What I need , is research help to go back as far in years as needed 100 - 200 - 300 more even. I want to finally figure out when records of Pit Bulls negativity harming people were noted . Were the original butcher dogs good with strangers ?

Not rocket science, theses days that a simple wholesome NET search gets you history info you want, and situations that make you wonder Hmm.
Are those really a APBT . or a mutt that is really far removed from the true breed .

Particular what was going on during the mid to late 1800's and 1900's is there Supporting info (real articles ) showing extremely low incidents during the way past.
This information I want in Black and White not just talk

Fact : Little rascals movies had 67 or 68 APBT's in use. Does that interaction of APBT and Kids , really represent the truth of how good the dogs really are
with kids and all the film crew people .

WTF is a butcher dog, i thought that was a rotti? the stigma comes from ppl breeding manbiters in their backyard for generations.

 

The simple fact is there has been dog attacks since there was dogs and people....but ya answered your own q's.....it was when druggies/and other scumbags got involved that they hit the papers....there is thousands of dog bites/attacks every year,,,but only certain breeds make the head-lines...unfortuneally....it really peaked in the 90's//?????????????????????

A butchers dog refers to the bulldog type dogs that were owned by butchers for the purpose of bull baiting.Laws were passed in towns in towns around the UK before 1700's where no bull could be butchered unless the bull had first been baited by dogs. As landowners and the gentry believed bulls that were baited had tender better meat.

 

The Cordoba fighting dog can shed lite , here we have a dog with capability . But in the long run fear from handlers caused the dog to disappear . Hard economic times ( part of the excuse for it's extinction ) can put stress on dog ownership but if a dog is great it survives along with people.
Interesting the Argentine Dogo is a recreated dog out of 30 Cordoba bitches, to recreate different use and most important Dog Human interaction .

Bull baiting does go back as far as year 1200 .Looking at old pictures of the sport you see proof it a gathering of many people (spectators) along with dog keepers catching flying in the air dogs. 1800s English law put a stop to it . WHY?
animal cruelty so we know a law was not put to due to humans being attacked along with the bulls .
It's clear for 600 years people felt safe to go to the event - 600 years !! .

i agree and in the early days of the apbt, if you owned an apbt it was for the[] usually. Nowadays or more recently a lot more ppl have got their hands on the breed and similar breeds and have been breeding ill-mannered, bad temperament dogs and "pit bull" being the label fr them although theyare not American Pit Bull Terrier. sorru for typos, im drunk War EAGLE!

 

If I can believe the statistics . Pit dogs or TYPE attacks have been recorded.
In the year 1976 year after year occur. previous to 1976 documented events were less and skipped years.

I feel bad for any people who have been hurt by dogs .
But I feel the smoking gun the pit bull has been mistaken and even lied about a great majority of the time.
There have always been bad breeding with dogs concerning human interaction .
All to easy any mastiff type can mix with a breed to create pit bull look type.

I have seen with my own eyes a recent mix of a Rotiwiler and a 20 pound beagle / collie mutt that gave birth in the past to 45 - 50 pound dogs the current puppies look like they will be as such also . they look like mini rots . or dare I say it " THE TYPE " this dog is owned by some one who lives near me.
Regardless of mistaken identity or not the reality is , A problem that is not going away.

 

afb yes also this term butcher dog is referred to the Rottweiler, simply because this was the breed the butchers and cattle drivers used around the area of Rottweil in Baden - Württemberg / Germany (close where I live) same goes out for the Boxer that before this name came into existance have been called Bullbaiter or also Butcher Dogs.

 

ourgalsunday....... the black and tan is found in many breeds..... Rottweiler, Swiss Mountain Dogs like Berner Sennenhund, Großer Schweizer Sennenhund, Entlebucher, Appenzeller, yet also within the German Jagd Terrier, the Manchester Terrier, the Dobermann and various other breeds. Yet if a dog attacks that might be a little bigger in size and displays this black and tan coloration... well people will more likely fall for the vicious image of the Rottweiler and call it a Rottweiler Type or Rottweiler Mutt if not Rottweiler itself!

Just imagine a cross between a Boxer and for instance a Pointer.... well the outcome would remind one of an APBT or PB Type, well if this dog happens to attack someone.... guess what they are pointing their fingers too....

This can even go with an AB mutt and so on.

People always build an image of certain breeds. There´s not a single dog encyclopedia for instcance that won´t spread bullshit descriptions of a breeds character to the unbiased reader. Like Retrievers are always good with other dogs and love children to death also they all are willing to please and so on. Same goes for the German Shepherd.... like obedient to its master by nature.... well this implies that you don´t have to train the dog as they are all born with an inherited obedience title......

Same goes for the APBT as for any other breed. There are tendencies within behaviour. An APBT is more likely to display DA at a certain age a Beagle might not. But believe me I´ve seen cases of fight crazy Beagles also as well as I got to know APBT (from proven lines) that you could throw right into a pack and they have been just perfect.

To me a dog is like this: 1. Animal (Species in this case dog) 2. Breed (even though if breeds haven´t been selected over a long time (recent) for a special purposes they show a far wider variety of inherited characteristics than for example breeds that are mainly bred based on selection for purpose (like German Jagd Terriers for instance) and the natural variation in wanted and unwanted traits. 3. The individual dog himself 4. The combination of owner and dog.

The sum of this is the result how and why a dog reacts in a certain way to its environment. All dogs even from one Kennel are individuals..... they have tendencies.... and if strictly selected for a certain purpose..... tendencies that are less widespread in their variety than others from breedings without selection for a prurpose.... but still there are more facts that will influence behavior and eventual display of aggression and all other kinds of behavior.

 

Documented cases were few and far between 100+ years ago, simply because of how news traveled. This breed was dominant in urban areas, and it wasn't until problems with aggression started becoming more public (and people saw they could make more than a quick buck selling puppies to John. Q. Public) that larger yards moved to rural areas.

There's a documented news article from 1909 along the east coast where a nephew of a well-known name in the dogs was killed on the yard when a dog grabbed him by the neck and went to shaking. That dog has listed offspring with a registry after the fact. That line of dogs is still around today.

Just goes to show that there always has been and will continue to be dogs in this breed, even when bred for a strict purpose, that will attack a human and not be culled. Now saying that, I'm not one to judge, but if you can contain and manage your yard appropriately, no one should be able to tell you what to do with your property.

All dogs bite, just depends when, and it's up to you to make sure it doesn't happen.

 

At the end of this ....there all dog's....some bite...some won't......regardless of the breed........THATS THE TRUTH....CK.....

not quite sure...i see they post stuff on here, but never visited their site. never really put much stock in any site that favors info in either direction, pro- or anti- bulldog.

 

The problem is due ti the media hysteria around dogfighting started in the mid / late 1970´s and reaching its peak in the late 1980ties early 1990ties there have been far more people attracted to these breeds that definitely do want to intimidate other people with their dogs or are just careless and more than often not able to manage themselves properly.

 

Lets put it this way if two or even one major drug dealer/or other such $%^&&..were caught at a pit fight it will be blasted all over the head-lines.....but if some of no major importance are caught they may make a little paragraph in page 4......what is that telling ya...............?????????????????????????????????//

A lot of it is probably due to a Mistaken Identity.

 

I believe StopBSL has proven dogbite.org to be full of shit on more than one occasion.

 

I'm not a betting man but I would bet 95% of the time it's a case of mistaken Identity. When I hear the word Pit bull I only recognize the APBT. Everything else is just a cheap imitation. They group many breeds, colors, types of dogs as Pit Bulls so there is no way their statistics are accurate. It's only purpose is to spread propaganda.
