Is there any other material that you can use instead of chain? Something that is lightweight, but doesn't tear or break easily. Any ideas?

There are other options but the chewing is what prevents them from being used. If a man knew 100% his dog wouldn't chew they could be used. If not steel is the only option.

For walking a dog, rope customized with hardware for sure . Care free yard set up, a strong chain and 2 clasps are all that is strong enough .
Thats a billion dollar invention a dog proof composite chain .

Why are you looking for an alternative? Cost, look or you just don't like them?

my opinion, the lighter the weight of the chain, the better. It's better for the dogs. Though, haven't found any material that work as well as chains.

What about rock climbing rope? Would that work for chaining dogs?

Dogs would chew thru rope in a matter of minutes. Chain is the way to go. If you dont want to use chain then spend the money for a good kennel. Going against the grain will typically end up in a disaster. Use what has worked for centeries......

  7. I think people use chains instead of any rope is because dogs cant chew through chains

Take AGK s advice..And a Good kennel setup for APBT is expensive.I used hog pannels.I still got chain setups to.U also have to prevent them from digging out.

Laced dont be telling the kid that shit. I've seen people use it and have thier dog all wrapped up in it and half dead. Kid use the search box for threads on the proper chain set-ups. If you cant handle a dog on a chain you might want to drop the pitbull part of your screen name.

ive seen it used with no issues, just need a real heavy guage.... i would actually worry more about it winding itself up.... but it would take a real long time.......

There is a reason after all these hundreds of years of pit dog keeping that chain spots have been the number one way to contain them.. had anything else been found that is as secured and as escape proof then we'd all be using that.

The problem with coated cable is once the coating is compromised the cable inside starts to rust and frey and eventually break. I use to use one to let a house dog I had that was a Smooth Coat Collie and I had to replace it at least once a year from weather damage. I used 1/4" cable and seen a collie break more than one once the coating was cracked and that was just to let outside to empty not a dog that is on it 24/7. I would never trust one on a Bulldog. Not saying they can't work if constantly watched for damage just would rather use a chain. I have seen a few real nice overhead set ups using coated cable though. Upkeep seems more than I would want to have to worry about personally especially if we're talking about more than just one dog.

show me one that got chewed through, i agree with agk youll be replacing more than with a good chain.......which is why i prefer a stainless or galvanised chain...... but it wont get chewed through..... youd damn near need a torch......
