    Friends,

I have an 8yr old Gator Line female. She is currently in heat and I noticed that she is bloated and looks to be in discomfort. I have no intention in breeding her, however i am undicided if wether I should take her to the vet or if her sympotms are normal for an older female in heat (menopause?).

Have any of you experianced this with your dogs?

She could be plugged up and not passing food like she should but like scratchin said I would be takin her to the vet for sure.

When was the last time see took a dump? If she hasn't in a day or two, you can give her some mineral oil to help her dump. If she doesn't take a dump in a couple hours. I would take her to the vet.

    Thanks for the replies,

She has been taking two-three dumps a day like normal. I gave her an immodium in a hotdog, it seems that it helped because she looks more relaxed. I will keep a close eye on her though and might have her spayed after this heat so she wont have these symptoms anymore.

Take her to the vet it could be Pyometra !!!!!!

  7. You nailed it OldTymer!Pyometra is an infected uterus, which causes internal swelling andif not treated by a vet asap will cause death!! The other possibility I was thinking of is heartworms which will cause a 'bloated belly' in the advanced stage, the bloating is actually built up fluid and blood that the heart can no longer pump because it is full of worms,Im sorry to say but either could cause you to lose your girl if you dont get the vet out asap. What do you give to prevent heartworms? I have been through this before with a older female I was given by a friend, and not thinking first I dosed her with ivomec along with the rest, a couple days and she was very big in the belly, and wouldnt come out of her house. She did have heartworms, and would not have made it without a vet.

    Hey everyone,

OldTymer was correct she was diagnosed with Pyometra and Kidney failure. The vet gave me a diagnosis of 5% survival rate after surgery. I had to put her down, my family and I are heartbroken.

Sorry for your loss i lost a good bitch to it in the 90's within 24hrs. I had another bitch i had to have put to sleep about five years ago who had it,she was getting on about twelve years old,it was kinder to put her to sleep than put her through a big operation.
