Are apbt good runners?

Hi everyone! I just asked a probably really stupid question, but I really don't know the answers. I looked it up online and says pitbulls are usually good sprinters or mid-short range runners.

But here's the point that I know what the pitbulls we talk here are usually different from the wide definition of pitbulls in most other pet websites(where they have blue, red, all american and so many other strains that I dont understand).

So I would like to ask what's the running abilities of an apbt, go by the definition of game-dog forum.

To specify my question, I know some bicyclists (not even close to pro level) can travel up to hundred miles a day or, can go a road trip for thousands of miles in months (like a road trip, but more local houses overnight stay/local bar chilling time etc etc), or even simpler, my friends that jog can do 6 miles in 30-40 minutes pretty easy, 5days a week (he was a geek guy before, play videos games only) in 2 months since started, and he is still increasing his stamina, speed etc.

I have read some "keeps" that their handwalk distance is 10+ miles at last afew days but IMO that kind of keep is way hard for a dog to take it as lets say daily or weekly or monthly right?

My question is how much of things above I can expect to do with my dog some day in the future?

I also have a dream that after I make myself into a decent graduate school, ill be driving an all-purpose car(lets say subaru) with a bike mount on the back and I just drive to those national parks or wherever worth a view in life and when it's too rough for the car I just hop on my mountain bike and start some adventure, and eventually get to live in the tent for nights.

a lot of details need to be considered I know, but for the general idea, do you guys think its possible to take a dog and still make it an enjoyment?

I have seen game breed dogs spend all day on the ground sprinting trotting and fighting hogs and never slack up. I have seen other bull type dogs that did good to run 100 yards. A dog just like u can handle the miles if conditioned. The trick is the speed at which u travel . When I hunt I travel at 5mph. My dogs will work an area up to 300 yards ahead working back and forth. They can all do this for around 8 hours at a time. It is not uncommon for them to cover 30 miles in a day. When the temps get up or the constant speed is increased the distances get shorter. It's all in paying attention to ur dog and knowing when to push and when to break. With proper conditioning ur dog could accompany u on some long treks but he's not gonna be there at 15 mph for to long regardless of condition .

In short, they are phenomenal at anything that would be considered a physical activity and the strains you mentioned are just colors or BYB terms to peddle pups. None of them mentioned are a strain or bloodline ;).

Thanks for the replies! AGK I agree with that just by looking at all those great dogs' pictures, and I know they ain't really a bloodline name am just being confused when people ask if my dog is an "all american" pit or whatsoever and I replied with oh hes half ridgeback half boxer...

I just need a clearer view to know what exactly I should expect :). In my dream plan I wouldn't ask too much in keeping high speed for long distance because the major distance will be done by the car, but if got chance will love to get off the car and bike into the landscapes with my dog, lets say jogging with owner for 10 miles weekly isn't too hard for apbt if given the time and nutrition to build up right? (Actually just earlier today I have viewed a thread talking about deep or wide chest in those apbts and seems alot ppl agree that deep chest help the stamina/wind, but i just feel like my dog, though well bred(imo), doesnt seem to be a deep chester or long legger in apbts, will it affect much?

btw I am really curious if anyone can give me a intuition view of how apbt being phenomenal at physical activities? I know from Mr.Garner's site he claimed that Chinaman had the similar oxygen intake level of a top greyhound, but I'd love to learn more, such as if compare an apbt (from a breeding program) compare to other normal quality dog breeds from reputable breeding program, in the stamina area, for example, like shotgun mentioned, trot back and forth with a bike or with a walker, be it on horizontal surface or slowly steep at some degrees (up/down hill).

Is apbt compareble with a ridgeback/weimaraner/lab or even sled dogs? That way I have a very clear view on what to expect :)

Being athletic is self explanatory, if you've spent any amount of time around one of these dogs it's hard to miss. Considering what they were bred to do its second nature for them to use every part of their bodies to compete and complete a challenge. Just give your charge a regular maintenance routine and he/she will answer all your questions in due time.

All I can say is it depends on the dog you got. Getting a dog from a working line improves your chances of having a dog that would meet your needs. I have had a few and can say some are great and can go whole day a few could go only for short periods especially when it get warm. i got one that I need to stop or he will go over and beyond what his body is capable of at the moment

If ur dog is conditioned there is nothing u can do on 2 feet he can't do on four. Short of rock climbing. If u use mechanical advantage u will be able to outperform the dog if u run all out. There is no reason a dog out of game lines shouldn't be able to perform just as well as any breed short of a sight hound. Depending on the ridgeback ur dog may or may not keep up.

...a jack russel,,will have more stamina than a human,,it's a dog....4-legs....if it gets to hot it will lie up in the shade,no matter how fit he/she is............................................................

He asked about APBTs not about Jack Russels. THE APBT is a verry active and athletic dog and if the dog has no physical issues he should do verry well.

A jack russell is very different from APBT..Jack Russells need to have fat on them even when they are working. And no mine wont lay in the shade when they get too hot lol.U have to make em stop.

Thanks for all input Im having a better view now, I think my dog will be ok with me with whatever I want to do with 2 feet and 2 hands except straight climbing...lol. And guess I will be fine if I mainly do the distance on carride and adventure somewhere with my dog in a relatively slow pace like 30miles a day maxi and around 5m/hr something like that :p

That's an article for conditioning dogs for a 12 mile run. The majority of dogs doing it would be german sheherds, much larger and bulkier than an apbt, so more prone to overheating and fatiguing. Think of the distances sled dogs run? While a working sled dog has been bred to trot effortlessly for hours, there are some structural similarities w/an APBT. So, I think you can find an APBT that can keep up w/you.
Some dogs definitely have better wind than others, and you'll have to remember that dogs cool far less efficiently than humans. Also, prey drive may interfere w/your need to have a dog off leash.
