    Hi
I am new to this site. I am in in the Twin cities and wondering if anyone knows how to get together with others that are not afraid of pit bulls. I want to socialize my dogs and everyone is afraid because they have Pit bull in them. Frustrating. Any advice is welcomed.
    Thanks much:confused:

Welcome, why do you want to bring a breed of dog notoriously known for dog aggression around other dogs? It's like trying to get the cat to love the mouse. Personally I think your just setting your dog up for failure but to each their own, good luck with the socializing and welcome to the site. ;)

Welcome aboard, I agree with AGK. Some apbt are ok with other dogs but that's not the norm. Personally, I wouldn't be trying to socialize my dogs with others but if you must....be careful and have a break stick handy.Good luck.

I thought this was a site for pit bulls? Are you saying you have never had your dogs around other dogs? There have been others who have had their dogs around other pits. Socialization helps to make sure they are comfortable with others. What do you preach on this site? You do not have other people come around your dogs either?

I can only speak for myself, I won't let my dogs "socialize" with any strange dogs. There's nothing I personally see good coming from it. You don't know anything about these strange dogs, they could have contagious diseases that your dog will now have any you'll have to deal with it. But most importantly, in my opinion, is the fact that you own a animal aggressive dog. Everything in it's instinct is to be animal aggressive, sure things could go great with another dog for a period of time, but it's not IF but WHEN will things go south. Good luck.

  6. No amount of socialization or doggy play dates will prohibit your dog from developing genetic dog aggression. It's a natural instinct that has nothing to do with training and socialization.

On this site and any bull breed site worth it's salt, truth behind genetics and responsible ownership will be preached. Whether that's what you WANT to hear is your own prerogative but your opinion of the truth doesn't make it any less true.

So - do you ever take you dogs around other dogs? Dogs you know?

    I have 2 pits.

And What I was originally getting at is - my "family is moving south" So my dogs will only have ME for any human socialization. Everyone I know are afraid of "the pit bull".

Only "those kind of people" have "that type of dog". You know drug dealer, etc so why do "I" have those dogs. OK - which makes me really upset - very closed minded individuals!

So I am looking for individuals who love pit bulls - who are not afraid of them - who might want to meet them so that the dogs would not be stuck with only ME.

    The boring owner.

I love them very much - no they are not my babies - I know I need to be and yes I am the Alpha - at least I work on it.

They are very large lap dogs! Who are right now happy, funny, silly dogs. That I would like to stay that way - but they will need more humans around. I will take suggestions - I do not know how to go about this! I need help to keep my dogs happy and health.

People already gave you advice but you are not listening. You are looking to go out of your way with these dogs and and try to prove something and put your dogs at risk by putting them in a hostile environment because of those close-minded people? When that dogs snaps at or bites another dog you did exactly what all of them knew all along and you will let the breed down in a big way. Best bet is not to go there. Sure some are cuddly and all but are you really going to risk that? Just think about it.

When your dog cranks up in public and snatches up someones dog then what?
I would never trust one of these dogs around strange dogs ever I don't even trust them around each other when raised around each other. If you want a dog to have dog buddies you should find another breed.

Vcyndi - firstly you need to new friends. Second you need to understand that dog aggression and human aggression are two completely separate things. Now, historically, the APBT was bred to fight another APBT while being handled closely and intimately by a human (not just the owner), surrounded by humans with just a short wall separating the dogs and people. It was a very up close n personal affair. Outside of a few events, pre 1976, it was almost unheard of to hear of a "pit bull" attack.

Now your saying you own this breed. I don't know your dogs pedigrees. For all I know they could be am staffs. What I do know is that if you own an APBT you need to know how to care for and respect the breed. The ADBA is a good place to start reading. They have events in almost every area where you can meet many knowledgable people. They have a safe dog program. Check the website. Dog parks are for idiots, your dogs don't need to meet strange dogs unless you like diseases and lawsuits and breed bans. Don't try and be the dog whisperer, it's a carefully crafted show and they NEVER show you all his failures and flop. Good luck!
