all of mine are on axles as well. For anyone who burrys them how do you get them back up when you move the yard around or move to a new place? I generally leave mine a inch or so up so i can slap them from side to side and they come right up. but how would you get a axle out if its buried?

Unbury it and pull it up. lol Take something for leverage like a 2"x4" or pipe and wrap the chain around it and lift up. Use your legs not your back. I got plenty of axles if you ever need any.

A chain and a fence post puller does the job just fine for removing an axle really easy actually or you could even use one of the old car jacks

I know, and i do like axles for the conveniance of moving and not having to rely on pops for welding! Lol

Ya'll make it to complicated. Bury a earth anchor and leave the tip above ground. Its round and it can't get tangled plus you can see and replace parts of the set-up without pulling the anchor out the ground. It will be safe rain sleet or snow.

well the parts underground take a really long time to go bad in the first place and if you have a dog around many trees and it storms rains hard or even during the fall lots of leaves small limbs and debris do get caught in the eye when left above ground and will tangle so i will keep mine buried

You don't leave that much of it out. Just enough so that you can see whatever you attach to the eye. If that much was exposed then of course the dog would get tangled and of course there would be other issues. I know people are set in there ways often but all that stuff is over kill when there is an easily more effective way.

I check mine while they are eating and i have never had to replace a chain due to wear in a dogs lifetime. Chain wear is going to vary depending on the ground its in. We have pretty soft earth here and i have never pulled up a set up and seen wear on a chain from being underground. Im a if it aint broken dont fix it kind of person and have never had a reason to replace a chain due to wear and tare from it being underground. Others may have different expierence with this but this is my expierence with burring my anchors.

I check them almost daily but its usually years before anything needs to be replaced. I just use quick links and lock tite them down. A chain set-up is only as complicated as u make them...

I think I will go with the earth anchor, rain are no rain. On the cold shut do you spot weld are just close them with a hammer? Sorry for all the questions I am new to pitts. Thanks for the help. Pops

I don't use cold shuts, I use quick links. I put lock tite on the threading and close it real tight. Once it dies the only way to get it off is with bolt cutters or a blow torch lol ill let you other guys sit out there all day welding and hammering, I have dogs to walk :p

Didn't see this before I posted.

Dream it don't take but 1 or 2 minutes to close a cold shut, your glue will take longer to dry.... lol

If it takes a person all day to weld up a few links they dont need to own dogs or be welding. Its hard to believe no one has to replace a chain. 5/16 grade 70 transport chain lasts about three years here for the chain runners. Must be the little bit of sand thats in the soil.

I've had to replace a few chains, lol I inspect them pretty routinely actually. I like the grade 70 chain,it wears well but the rocks and the ground will wear it out after while, just not as fast as the lower grade chains.
