Does anyone know an insurance company that will write a homeowners policy in Florida for me and my dog? We were using USAA and everything was fine, but our new address has some kind of sink hole issue, so they are passing us off to ASI, who absolutely will not insure an APBT. The guy even said that they will send an inspector out to see the dog in case we try and lie.

I've tried a few companies, but between being in Florida with the storms and having the dog things are getting dicey, and we're supposed to close on our new house on monday.

    Anyone????

state farm is somewhat pitbull friendly.......just expensive if you have them...

im not sure if AAA offers home owners insurance, but we have renters insurance through AAA....they may have a similiar plan for home owners.....

and if all else fails, its a boxer/lab/greyhound mix! they arent vets or scientists so tell em to fuck off!

I just put: mix breed dogs on my policy. Like LWG says, they don't know the differece and if they try to bust your balls with it tell them you are willing to have the dogs DNA'd to prove they are of mixed breed....

Thanks for the replies. State Farm, while pit bull friendly, hasn't written a homeowner's policy in FL since 2008 (that's what their guy told me). Florida is a pain in the ass....

Anyway, I found a guy that gets quotes from every insurer there is, and found one that is willing to insure the house, but leave the dog out of it. I'll probably get some stand alone liability for the dog, just in case, but at least now I'll be able to move on schedule.

Good luck to you. Its a shame how people who own these dogs are looked at as if every one of these dogs is going to open a claim for the company when in reality, your way more likey to get bit by another breed of dog than you are by a APBT.

I had a problem when i moved to the place i am in now a little over a year back they come to take pics for the policy saw my dogs and immediately canceled the insurance did not ask the breed just assumed long story short i called them talked pretty much they hold me liable in case of a dog bite which i am not worried about anyway but it is ridiculous that if a dog looks a certain way they are automatically assumed a dangerous breed and i did tell them i had mixed breeds but that didn't work

Yeah I looked outside one day to see a random guy taking pictures of my dogs! I came outside with the intention of kicking some ass and becoming the new owner of a very nice camera but he quickly pulled out a card showing he was with my insurance company and let me know I would no longer have protection from accidents on my property...

Florida only has like 2 insurance companies that write homeowners policies due to the fact of some laws and hurricanes. Florida mandates what an insurance company can charge for a premium. Most big names dropped out because if you recall back right before the governor election the insurance companies wanted to raise premiums 45% and I think it was Christ only let them raise it 10%. My insurance when I had a house had my little schnauzer on there and that was it, with my renters I have a lab mix. Personally unless your dog is running loose or you have lots of people over it shouldn't be a problem? Also if you get dropped your mortgage will enact a policy on your behalf, now it may cost you some extra $$ but you will be covered. I would guess that many big yards don't have any mention of a dog. And sinkholes been around for ages, like 4 yrs ago one opened up on I-4. This one just makes the news becuase some dude got sucked in. They also happen all the time in the strawberry fields, especially if a frost comes during growing season. the farmers pump the water constant so they won't freeze, it creates voids in the aquafer and the limestone falls.

I didn't meantion my dogs but someone repairing our roof saw them and reported them and that's when the problems started. I did have coverage for awhile before that however

When I was talking to the guy at ASI, at first I tried to play it off like I had some mutt, and he got suspicious. He told me to send pictures of the dog. I, of course, was thinking I could send pictures of a different dog. He must have read my mind because then he told me that they could send inspectors with no notice, and if we did have a dog that looked like it was even mixed with one of the banned breed that our policy would be cancelled.

The whole thing sucks. I was happy with USAA.....
