I was just wondering how have you all chosen the vet you have. This has always been a thought of mine since i have gotten a nice size yard. How do you choose? What questions do you ask him/her? Do you tell them right from the get go that your a "breeder" "hunter"?
sorry for poor choose of label. Or do you switch vets with dogs? What do you look for? I know the common sense ones like look for small over head and things of nature. Just looking for advice.

I use a country vet, in my expierences, city vets are more used to dealing with pampered pets and tend to lean more towards an AR nuts prospective on things where as farm vets or those who typically practice treating working animals seem to have more of a farmers mentality when it comes to animals in general. I wouldnt tell either of them you hunt unless you actually do use them to hunt ( and not in the sence we use the word). Plus city vets usually have big fancy offices and who do you think pays for those buildings? You the client in the price you pay to have your animals treated. A good vet will give you their home phone number incase of an emergency where as most city vets will tell you to go to a local animal er so you can pay triple for the services rendered. Finding a good vet is not always easy. I drive 20 miles to mine rather than the 6 vet offices in close distance to me and in a tight bind, its well worth it to me.

ones where english isn't the first language. from my experience over the years folks not from the states have a different understanding. the one were close with family in cuba were chicken men. the fella has pictures of birds all through the office so we knew that was the place to deal with.

I take pups in and kindve get a feel for them. If they start talking the its not the dog its the owner bs, trying to sell me science diet or saying that most pit bulls would never hurt a fly I know its time to move on. Needless to say I STILL don't have a good vet.

Dream, It took me 15 years to find one that was exactly what I was looking for in a vet. Never tries to upsell me anything and if anything, tells me cheaper ways to do things with the same sucess rates as high priced meds and procedures. Is always available and will let me be right there helping with surgical procedures plus he has a cool ass personality. Dudes office is in his barn on his property. It's him and his wife and both are licenced vets. Only shitty thing about his practice is they are 3 townships away but in the end, the service and his farm mentality is a benefit to me so to me, well worth the drive. Keep looking bro, good ones are around still. ;)

I agree with the farmer type vet that is the one I use. Great people the vet has came in in weekends for me ( long has I had cash in hand to pay) and does well with my hounds. I actually pass by two vets to get to mine. She never questions me on what I say or tries to sell me on something she knows I don't need. Now if your more of a breeder then a sportsmen, which is okay we all need breeders then you need a vet that your willing to spend money with to build a relationship with cause your going to need them before during and after the birth of pups.

country vets are usually pretty awesome as they understand the whole concept of working dogs and dogs that aren't pets. my vet isn't a country vet, but he hunts with his dogs and is pretty hard on em. he understands working dogs. plus i worked for him for almost 3 years, so i know how he is and i can trust him.

I got lucky with my vet, I had tried many in the area and I had a ton of friends in a few towns over tell me how their vet was really good, and I asked about price...they didn't know haha...well I went there, 35 bucks for all the shots no matter the size of dog, no walk in fee for shots, the only time I had to call for a real appointment (not shots) I got in the next day and in the AM, they don't overcharge. The only thing they push is to get on Heartworm preventatives (since its bad here) and after you get going on them they don't ask even for a heartworm test (if you started with them as a pup and kept it up) if you don't want one, some people might think that isn't good practice but if your giving heartguard and then suspect the 1st treatment is heartguard...so yea...anyhow my vet is a 2 vet practice 35 or so miles away. They get my boy in either 1st appointment or 1st one after lunch so there are not many dogs in there, they put the cat up when they know I am coming in, and its a country vet that also does large animals so they don't try to get at your wallet.
