Twenty-six pit bull terriers, many of them chained and severely underfed have been were rescued from a suspected dog fighting ring.

The animals were freed from make-shift wooden open kennels by animal welfare officers in Florida after an anonymous tip-off.

When officials swooped on the suburban home in Plant City on Monday, they found dogs chained up in the back yard, bleeding from cuts and wounds to their bodies and heads.

Two people are expected to be charged with a series of offences The property is surrounded by a six-foot fence and is 100 yards from its nearest neighbour.

The dogs - some of which are believed to have been used for fighting - are being cared for at Hillsborough County Animal Services. They are all expected to survive their injuries.

Officer Pam Perry told ABC Action News: 'Some of them are severely injured. Clear cuts to their faces, forelimbs, head -- they are still bleeding.

'The closest house was probably about 100 yards away but clearly somebody came forward with enough concern about what was going on. We saved these animals' lives.'

Ms Perry was pictured holding one of the rescued pit bull terriers in her arms after the pup was freed from heavy chains.

ABC Action News reported that the investigation by animal welfare officers is continuing and charges are imminent.

The dogs will face an uncertain future when they have recovered because they have been traumatised by their ordeals as fighting dogs.

Adoptions take a long time with experts having to assess how damaged the pets have been by the experience.

Looks like they've been chewing on their fleas, at worst. could have a nicer setup, but the dogs look ok...

Yeah I agree the setup sucks. Just putting this out there for people to think about when you have a shitty ass set up like this it can draw bad attention or the wrong kind of attention. Obviously people should mind their own business but come on if you are going to have 26 dogs at least provide them some decent houses and a clean living space if you can't do the bare minimum you don't need 26 dogs.

just don t get it, set up sucked but over all the dogs looked healthy shit one was a fat blue mutt. Seriously people need to take pride in how they keep a yard that right there just cost 26 dogs their lives and most likely was somebody peddling dogs damn, but these raids r picking up lately Yis Ole Man

the setup is an after-the-fact detail, but it sure is an insight into what led to this arrest and confiscation....carelessness

My take on it is this. The housing sucks,I realize it is Florida and it doesn't get cold there, but let a dog chew a upper board on one of those pallets used to make the house with and it can hang itself,so IMHO stupid idea for a house.I also personally would have spaced them farther and given them a longer chain, but as far as the dogs I don't see scarred up or emaciated dogs and like was mentioned 26 dogs on chains means dog fighting ring to a lot of people anymore. I disagree with anything HSUS does and personally find it appalling that everything is a dog fighting ring now days, but the housing should be a picture perfect example of how to look like an idiot on housing dogs. My advice is if you are going to have a yard of bulldogs, to house the dogs properly and keep them out of site and out of mind of other people and you'll get less anonymous tips.

Maybe I'm on the wrong site, and I'm not trying to be disrespectful here, but am I the only one here who believes that a dog deserves a better life than this? Keeping them out of sight and out of mind? How do you keep 26 dogs out of sight and out of mind in a neighborhood? WHY do they HAVE 26 dogs if they aren't breeding or fighting? It's not like they are koon dogs.

Yes,you may on the wrong site, just depends on what your outlook is.LOL My point is,if you have a yard of dogs it is best to not have a lot of nosey people butting into your business.I did not say I thought they were housed properly and IMHO non looked to be fought,I mean really who would fight the fat blue piece of crap dog in the pic,lol Breeding is not illegal and if I want to own 26 dog,50 dogs or 200 dogs I will, but whatever I own I will house properly. It just is not mine or anyone elses business to say how many of one particular thing someone can own.

Keeping 26 dogs out of sight, out of mind is pretty easy if you have the appropriate amount of space and property. It doesn't really matter if they are coon dogs or not, they are dogs and have similar needs to other dogs with the exception of needing to be kept separate from the other dogs.I know people that have far more than 26 dogs that can still house them better than this,I have also seen people with one or two dogs that provided horrible housing. So it's not the number of dogs it's the way the owner chooses to care for them.

Ok, good point. I don't want anybody telling me what I can or can't have. So I will give you that. But my God, 26 dogs in a neighborhood? HOW do you keep neighbors from complaining? If one is a breeder, are they supposed to provide certain things for the dogs (shelter specifically)?

"Blue fat piece of crap dog"? He's probably more intelligent and (would have been) loving than many beautiful dogs that people pay big buck for. My pit is stunning. No doubt (I will post pics at some point) he would be valued (by his looks) highly as a "game" dog. I'd have to kill the person that calls him a piece of crap...LOL!! Thanks for the reply. Not trying to be an a**. Just curious about others feeling regarding these dogs.

As I said, regardless if you own one dog or 100,you need to provide adequate housing.I know people that own more than 26 dogs and have no problem with neighbors. It helps if you live out of town with some acreage that means nobody is close, but I know a guy that lives in a major city that has had over 100 at one time and still keeps his dogs.It is just a matter of if a person wants to do right by the dogs or put them up some rotten housing like this, but my point was even at the best you can do,if people see the dogs then it just takes one person to think you are fighting them.I did not see one scarred up dog in the pics.My comment about the blue dog is,that is was not a game bred dog and highly, highly unlikely ANYONE would fight that dog because it just isn't going to happen. My guess would be,just someone that either wanted to breed a few dogs or just kept getting dog after dog.But I don't see a fighting ring IMHO. As I mentioned, the shelters suck badly, but owning multiple dogs is entirely possible if a person goes about it the right way. The sad thing is,people think they help these dogs when the call animal control, but in reality it is a death sentence.

I didn't see scars either. I am pretty familiar with the looks of a dog who fights, and these don't have that look. I just hate the environment. I'm doing a paper (and I'm a pit owner), so sorry for the intrusive questions. Just trying to get perspective from everybody's point of view on issues like breeding, fighting, BSL's etc. Trying to be objective. Appreciate the reply.

If you do a search on this site and look around, you will see what most consider proper housing. It's definitely not wood pallets with a piece of tin on top. Also proper chain setups in my mind doesn't look like these either, lol But if they had an scarred dogs, those should be the ones in the pics,if these dogs had sores it was probably flea bites.

Thanks. What is your opininon of chaining? Should there be no chaining? Or if there is, should a length or weight be involved? I'm trying to get more info on chaining laws in SC, but can't find anything concrete. We chained our dogs when I was growing up and I don't recall any aggression. So I don't take issue with it EXCEPT when I see that they don't have room to move or get entangled easily.

I thing people should be allowed to chain their dogs. I chain my dogs with no problem. I usually use 12 foot transport chains attached to an O ring around a car axle driven into the ground, attached to a swivel that is attached to the collar. If the chain spots are kept clean like they should, they have no problem with tangling. I'm not aware of SC chaining laws.
