if you were starting a yard or had to start one again how would you do it? how did you do it? Im interested in hearing what routes to take in doing this matter. Do you find a mentor first or do you find a bloodline that you like and start there? lets hear what y'all would do?

my dogs are redboy/jocko chinamen with jeep deep in the peds. chain setups are obvious when your having many dogs as they cant all be inside. Im not so much looking for yard set ups as there is a post for that im more interested in the approuch fanciers took to choosing bloodlines and how they set the dogs up male female wise to start there yard.

a mentor first, then a good bitch, and keep everything off her. feed the best, cull the rest

i wouldn't be on the computer. i'd be at every dog show that i could talking to the folks with what i was intrested in. wouldn't even get dogs till i had a pretty good understanding of what it involves. it looks easy from the outside but once your committed you learn different. other then that i'd say get some fish.

pretty harsh ben brockton but also very realistic.. the commitment is huge and the pay off small long hours involved in the dogs and the more you get the more work and sacrifice involved i would say..but if you are seriously interested and love the dogs hear is my advise...... read everything you can put your hands on research every line not just the flavor of the month, talk to everyone sometimes even petbull and bully people because they could give information even if it is only just not what to do. mentors are good but you have to hve some sort of knowledge before most people open up to you. dont start a yard until you cna afford to properly care for one dog and put in all the time and effort to keep this dog healthy, fit, happy, secured and out of trouble. then mutliply that by how much you want to keep. then think about what purpose is this yard or what goal is this yard attempting to accomplish. do all this before you get one dog.

i grew up around the breed and my best friends fathers yard in particular. he allowed us to be involved on the outside doing the feedings and excersize outside of any keep going on. during keeps he would allow us to watch and learn and that is far as it got. he taught us alot and also gave us the opertunity to meet other dog men as we got older by doing some of the dealings with breeding and transporting pups. I would say it was all great times and folks that i was involved with and that is what has kept my interest up to now. I do have mentors and and people to go to for knowledge but i also like to hear what you folks have to say cuz knowledge is key to me. you can never get enough. the dogs i have now come from a man who has only delbt with these particular bloodlines. All replies so far has been great in my eyes as well as for the newer folks getting involved. thanks guys.

I would buy the baddest bitch I could buy or a bitch who has produced good dogs. Purchase her and then breed her to the best studs I could find and keep as much as I could off the litters and go from there.

A mentor would be fine, but might be hard finding someone who is willing to take a risk with someone new. I'd find the best dogs I possibly could, bloodline doesn't matter so much as they're good in all and bad too, find good dogs who produce good dogs and cull hard.

As much as I recommend going to shows there is absolutely nothing wrong with being on the computer. There are way more information here than any one person can give you about anything dog. You get the pros and cons online not just some narrow minded dude's opinion.

I do agree with the info that can be learned from the computer but there is also nothing better than the hands on learning as well. Different opinions are just that... Opinions... Being shown the ropes and taught hands on in person i learn the most but opinions also alow people to determine there own ways to what they want to accomplish.

Go get a few medical books or articles and learn as much as you can about dogs, how to care for them how to recognize symptoms and what medicines & supplies you will need in case of accident or sickness.

First i would make sure i could even start a yard. Some land lords wont go for that. Buying my own property would be the way to go. Than i would find the purest boudreaux bitch and stud i could find and go to work. I have always wanted a yard like that. I am no expert so im sure their is all sorts of stuff wrong with this. I would even throw a cross in their somewhere. Maybe chinaman or jeep, course before all of that a mentor would be priority number one. Thats if i would even start a yard. I did a breeding one time and it just wasnt my cup of tea. I didnt even let them puppies feet touch the ground untill they were ready to go to their homes. My house smelled like shit for 3 months and it was hella expensive. I spent more money on the breeding than it brought in. Some great hog dogs was the only payoff. That made it worth it though.

    Google that ish!!!!!!!!!!

If starting a yard, how would you go about doing it? Buy female or two and find the best stud? Or buy a male and a female and if they work Breed them together?

Get females, as many as you can afford to care for.
