Had a friend who had one of these. I hated the damn thing, he was always barking or watching you everytime you were in his house.

These Dogs originate in the Canary Islands. Dogo Canario is usually the expression used for show types and perro de presa for the original working type dogs. I have only ever kept gamedogs and had one bandog, bandog breeding changes over several generations and gives a small dog which could never even be on par with a gamedog. Im looking for a good guard dog for my kennel and my dogs are not guard dogs but after working with gamedogs i find it very hard to settle with anything else. Looking into these dogs for guard purposes only but to be honest im not to fond of the idea. i dont like conventional guard dogs either ie-malinois/shepherds/rottweillers/dobermanns. So just trying to find ideas on what could be appropriate.

got my first presa last summer. still a pup but is a great dog, very guardy. great ob, started well into pp work. went with a working kennel based on a working line. couldn't be happier.

We have 2 females. The older female is one of the best dogs I have ever had, She is a great watch/gaud dog but also a great family dog. Like all dogs though you need to go to a reputable breeder and socialize your dog. Here is a pic from a few yrs ago of her with our daughter (she is always watching out for the kids)

nice dog ky dog looking good you purchase him in the states what lines is he, and Jake you have any pics and what kennel you choose to buy from. I have heard that they can be quite challenging to their owners have any of you guys experianced any of this. Would you Guys rate their guarding abilitys on par with Traditional guarding breeds.

here are a couple of pics from one of her first aggitiation classes at five months old. I went with harijan kennels in the usa and am more than happy with what I got and what they have going on. solid working stock. will be going back to what they are doing in the future for sure, great to deal with and a great guy. there are a couple of other guys who are working with similar stock and a similar program I would recommend also. the other guardian breeds I have had are neos and corsos. very different from both. I have had some working stock corso and been around show stock (they are night and day from each other), the presa is edgier than either but I have had no real issues with her. she is more responsive to ob work then any other dog I have ever had and is more than willing to engage a threat as a very young dog. the challenge has been directing her away from the wrong kind of supposed threats lol. I still keep corso, they seem better suited as a yard dog. very effective guards, but a little more discriminating in who and when they are offensive with. I very much like both breeds as similar and yet different as they are.

If you don't mind, what were your experiences with the Neo compared to the Presa?

I like the breed. worked ok, very limited by their physical make-up. defensive. good yard dogs. good with the family. no athleticism. started falling apart at 4-5 and took till 3 to really mature. did ok in the cold, not well in warm weather. would hit hard then tire. done for the day. a mess to keep with the constant big drooling. I see some kennels around now with neos who seem to be more traditional and better built for an active guardian role. nice to see.
like I said, this is my first presa. so far she has great athleticism. looks like she will be slow to mature to her full potential, but has been all about working since I got her. edgy compared to the neo, but not as a bad thing. I wanted a reactive, driven dog with good physical and mental stamina, she is (so far) exactly what I was looking for. not compareable to the more popular breeds of mastiff I have come across in any way. the presa is always watching for anything out of the ordinary. very quick to react. I like what I see in this dog a lot. hope this helps.

Thanks for the info. The neo sounds a lot like the dogue de bordeaux I used to have. Slow to mature then you only really get 3-5 years of work out of them if that.
