Neighbor had a dog tied to a tree. It struck the tree, killed the dog and welded the links together on the chain.

Have been thinking the same. In Darwin northern Australia we have a wet season with huge lightening shows that have to be seen to be believed I have 5 cable runs between trees and cringe when those lighting strikes are close, be intrested if any one has tried a lightening conductor of some sort or run a earth line to ground??

Sorry for your loss gimwitag... besides that this is an interesting thread and like the cable conductor idea, I am sure you can ground both ends with a ground rod similar that they have to the electrical panels on houses, but not sure how much it would help as lightning arches where it wants...
I could only imagine the dog surviving loose and confused...
I wonder about a conductor on the chain of some sort, but agian the arch does what it wants, a myth is that the rubber from the tires will insulate the jolt of electricity, not true as the tires would have to be huge to handle the strike...

I have heard of the hurricanes dropping trees on dogs,Any one lose a dog to tornados???
How about Katrina, I am sure some good dogs came up missing from the floods...Anyone ever lose a dog to flooding???
or other disasters such as a fires???

I remember hearing about Texas Express loosing a few by way of lighting. Kept dogs on a chain line. Lightning hit the line and went dog to dog. Killed a few of them in one incident.

Crepe Myrtle is a nice tree that doesn't grow tall and the limbs are not big but they bush out and give good shade and are very good looking trees.
