    Bad Rosemary is an example of a dog who wasn't very talented but had a lot of mouth and finish. It wasn't her ability that made her a good dog, it was her finish. She had bad intentions if she ever got you in a bad spot

    I expected the thoughts to run this way alot,Gameness #1,but with everyone rating finish at the bottom.IMHO I want the dog to have finish,it and ability is right there with gameness for me. In all honesty,if you non't have a decent amount of all and the dog is severely lacking in the important aspects it is a one dimensional dog and will find itself in trouble. Gameness is very important to me,but the dead game dog never wins.Got to finish too.

    This is tough, especially since some of these overlap. For example, conformation impacts durability.

    Gameness-5
    mouth, wind, durability & ability - 4
    speed & finish - 3
    conformation - 1
    -----------------------------------
    total =28

    She was only mouth and that created the finish. Guess she could kill in a minute with a finishing throat hold with a mouth like that.

    1 gameness
    2 mouth (though if smarts was part of the question I would put it as #3
    3 wind
    4 ability
    5 finish

    Mouth and finish are different. There are dogs who bite extremely hard that lack finish and there are dogs with no mouth who can definately finish. She had both. Finish would be one of the most important traits to me. And yes conformation would impact a lot of these other things but like I said its to complicated to accurately gauge. I would've been better off adding wind and removing conformation. That would have made this very difficult.

    People mean natural wind but I wouldn't waste to many points on wind since that's something you can improve. There are many athlete with poor natural wind who excel at their sport with good cardio training.

    But to be at an elite level of wind, a dog has to be born with it, and then conditioned. This applies to people as well. You cannot condition an average person to reach an elite level of wind, aka the ability to uptake and use oxygen. You need to have the genetic predisposition toward a high ability, then you need to train. There are breeds of dogs that are unable to surpass a certain level of oxygen uptake, and certain lines within game dogs have varying degrees of inherent cardiovascular talent. If you read about Chinaman, he is reputed to have been tested at a university lab, and to have demonstrated the same wind as top greyhounds.

    To emphasize my point, no, you can't level the playing field through conditioning. You might be able to increase a dog's wind through conditioning, but the competitors are doing the same. Therefore, the dog that has the greater genetic talent will still be ahead.

    This greater capacity then affects the other dimensions. If you run out of air, gameness, durability and finish will all suffer.
