Looking for some direction ....

Im just starting to research and Im looking for a pup. Im hoping someone could point me in the right direction as far as what bloodlines or breeders I might look into for what Im looking for.

Ill be doing a lot of hunting with the dog (hogs) and I really need something that isnt so damn hot that it cant be around other males. Theres a good possibility Ill be doing other sport work as well but first and foremost the pup will be my right hand man so to speak, companion and catch work.

There's dogs all over the place, but my main hang up is finding one that is livable in a multi-dog environment but at the same time isnt to damn watered down to get business done when I need it to. My primary residence is up in the mountains and Im out every weekend, and quite often gone for four days or so backpacking and the dog will be with me every step of the way. Its often I run into other dogs, so Im not real sure how to go about finding something that isnt going to be like pouring straight deisel fuel on a fire. Im not interested in an AB.

    Any suggestions?

Im not sure if I posted in the wrong section btw, the wanted area looked like it had to do with rescues rather then input on which breeders to look into.

  3. Im in the same boat you are, the biggest thing they will tell you here is to do your reearch on the breeder. that is if you already are familiar with the breed. I live in SoCal so finding a TRUE apbt is just about impossible so paying attention to threads is helping me out in a big way.

bud the things your looking for in a dog aint really fit for these dogs. at least for someone that aint exprenced with these dogs. they will get hot around other dogs sometimes m/f dont matter and sometimes not but its rare with a gb dog. they aint great for hunting becuase overall bmc/ redbones,ab are much better overall for that becuas its there job. way too many folks get these dogs only to be disapointed they cant mold it into what they want and end up putting it down or end up on the news.

  5. My friends in Texas that own hog-dogs they keep Dogos or catahoula/ lacy mix or black mouth cur.... hope that helps.

Thanks for the input. I understand, I was expecting to get that answer right out of the gate. I realize it isnt their original intended purpose but they sure as hell seem to excell at everything. Ive had several in the past, had some AB's, a Presa ... none of which matched the health and vigor of those pits I had back in the day.

Still, I see many catching with them, and I see them running with other dogs and having it work out (most of the time) ... so Im hoping to be able to catch a lead on something that has worked and Ive been digging around. I either end up finding overgrown ego boosters that have a hard time running across the yard or dogs that come from straight fire.

How about a controlled burn? lmao ... is that to much to ask? Maybe so ;)

The other thing to be mentioned is its not the end of the world if they got hot here and there ... thats fine, just not looking for something that is always on, all the time.

I dunno ... I may be barking up the wrong tree lol, but like I mention I see people running them and it seems to work out.

Tatonka Kennels is prob what you want. :) Bred off the game dogs but not bred now for that. They are doing well at keeping the good legal sides of the dogs thriving.

  9. I know what youre saying. If you have the cash go Talk to Tom Garner, from what ive herd his dogs are stable hard working well bred quality dogs and he has bean at it for a while... I know you can get the same quality dog for a lot less but finding those guys and getting them to sell one to you is a whole other story.

I just want to say that, thats not a knock on anyone here on this forum at all. Its just my opinion.

  10. Oh ya, forgot about them.

I appreciate the input guys. Ill look into it from what I remember last time I scoped out Garner it seemed like they might be hotter then what I was hoping for. <<<<< Although thats probably an ignorant statement.

As far as the dogo goes, with all due respect Ild rather have a watered down pit lol. Im sure theres pockets of good ones out there but seems to me that its a big IF trying to find one with decent nerves and if your lucky enough to get there now you have hips and elbows to watch out for. Again, no offense of course Im sure your buddies do what he needs them to.

Ild really like to go APBT, and thanks again for the input. Im all ears for any more suggestions if anyone has any, keep 'em coming Ill be looking into everything.

Tom is breeding a pretty serious dogs. Maybe lil more dog then what this guy is after. IMO

Just read OZZZ post....which is irony I typed the above. Tom's dogs probably are lil more bulldog then what you will want.

From what you seem to want. Tatonka is the best source. You get family of dogs, a respected breeder, and someone that will be there to help and answer questions through out the dogs life.

if your looking to have a bulldog and expect people to come across your paths on walks id keep him leashed up. as far as a team of dogs 1-5 dogs working together. it can be a toss up when dealing with APBT's. it can work but it may not. with any pure bred APBT from working lines you can expect them to go after another dog regardless if the working lines its from is watered down or not. it seems like you want the aggression but not the responsibility of the aggression. with these dogs you cant have one with out the other and you just may be feeding diesel to a fire. its not to say that even dogs from garner cant get along with other dogs. i have one myself from him that is 8yrs old that has lived with 2 non APBT's all its life. it will not hesitate to go after a strangers dog though. i dont believe in kennel knocking and saying this is watered and this is not because each one of these dogs are APBT's at the end of the day and can get you into trouble. just to add most hunters have bay dogs and then catch dogs. they usually hold onto the catch dogs till the bay dogs have the boar bayed. IDK i never hunted, but thats what i have always assumed, so keep your dog tied up if your expecting another dog to be in your path. i dont know if what i said helps, but as you say "I'd rather have a watered down dog" even that watered down dog can be DA. you can go with tatonka, but even there dogs will show signs of DA and get you into trouble if off leash. they too will go after a strange dog with out hesitation. take your pick but they are all APBT's at the end of the day. what really matters is the owners and the time you put into them to be able to tolerate another dog, but again that rule doesnt apply to a strangers dog.

Okay, here is my two cents on the topic, go with a dog that is Ukc/Adba. Most on here call them staffs. You can find them that have no amstaff in the bloodlines and have fire just not quite as hot as a gamebred dog. There are exceptions to every rule. You just have to look. The people I have known who did hog hunt used that type dog around 60-70lbs and have had good success.

catch dog enterprises in texas should be able to help. gary hammonds

  16. Bryants red devils may be a place to look. I know they mainly breed for catch dogs. Their dogs are little larger but may be what you're looking for. Not exactly game bred anymore but come off ofrn dogs.

Southern Inferno Kennels I know he hunt's hogs with his dogs and he shows them they seem to be all around dogs and he's done a bunch of hog hunting with his dogs. Anytime you hunt with APBT's if you are using them as catch dogs and have other dogs helping there is a chance you might have some issues as APBT's are not pack dogs but I have seen some do ok in those types of situations probably because they are too busy trying to catch the hog vs worrying about fighting with the rest of the dogs. Hammond's would be another good person to deal with I have heard nothing but great things about him and his dogs. Another line of dogs you could possibly do ok with would be the TNT dogs there is quite a bit of staffy blood in those dogs but they would probably get the job done for you. Just make sure you go to a breeder who breeds his dogs for what you are wanting them for. There are some APBT kennels who do nothing but breed hog dogs this is what I would be looking for.

wow what an accomplishment to have your kennel on national geographic. to the op though notice they have there catch dogs on leashes until they know they have the hog bayed with the bay dogs. dont let you dog run loose if you expecting to see people out there with you with there dogs. there will be a fight. with that said there you go this kennel looks damn good for the job.
